Lib Dems complain about leaflet

The Liberal Democrats are to make an official complaint about a Conservative election leaflet they claim contains "untrue statements" about their policies.

The Tory leaflet accuses the Lib Dems of wanting to "bulldoze" the Shaw Community Forest to make way for a new football stadium.

It also claims the party wants to stop Bath University coming to Swindon. But the Lib Dems insist they oppose plans to build the stadium at Shaw, and support the university as long as it is not built at Coate.

They are now reporting the publisher of the leaflet, Coun Mary Martin (Con, Toothill and Westlea), to the Standards Board of England, accusing her of bringing her office into disrepute.

The Tories, who accept the Lib Dems may have changed their minds and now oppose the stadium, point out that when the leaflet was printed Coun Michael Dickinson (Lib Dem, Central) was quoted on his party's website saying he was "enthusiastic about the initial plans" for the stadium.

The web page was later removed by the Lib Dems because of the "confusion" it was causing.
