A man from the Marlborough area was taken to hospital after his car was involved in a collision with another car and a lorry at Ogbourne St George.

The Wiltshire Ambulance Service received a 999 call alerting them to the incident on the A346 at 10.25pm last night.

An ambulance crew arrived at the scene just after 10.30pm and a man, thought to be in his 20s, was trapped by his legs in a grey BMW which was on its roof.

A rapid response paramedic also attended the scene along with a Wiltshire Air Ambulance critical care paramedic, who arrived by car, and a doctor.

At about 10.30pm two fire crews and appliances from Marlborough and a Swindon emergency support unit carrying heavy duty fire equipment rescue attended the scene and firefighters had to cut the man from the wreckage.

The man, who was freed at 12.30am, was given pain relief and taken to John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

He was accompanied by the critical care paramedic and the doctor so he could be given continued care after sustaining serious injuries to both his legs.

A spokesman from Wiltshire Ambulance Service said: “Our priority was treating the patient who was trapped in the vehicle.

“It was a difficult and prolonged operation to get the patient safely out.”

At 11pm a second ambulance crew had arrived to treat the three other people involved in the accident, a driver and passenger from the other car - an orange Fiat Punto - and the lorry driver.

Two of the others involved in the accident were discharged at the scene, including the lorry driver, and the third was taken to Great Western Hospital in Swindon but is not thought to have sustained serious injuries.

There was minimal damage to the lorry and the chickens it was transporting were not thought to have been harmed.

Police cordoned off the area and surrounding roads while the rescue operation took place.

The scene was then cleared of debris and the road was reopened at about 3am.
