DAVE Webb says the disappointment at Swindon Supermarine’s shocking 4-3 defeat at home to ten-man Evesham United will take a long time to shake off.

Marine were in total control of the contest at the Webb’s Wood Stadium, racing into an early 3-1 lead after the visitors had keeper Kevin Sawyer sent off.

However, they were inexplicably unable to see out the contest and a second goal brought Evesham back into it before the break.

That goal rocked the hosts and they were all at sea in the second half, allowing Evesham to net an equaliser before they finally snatched an against-the-odds-winner in stoppage time.

“It was a really bad day for us all. It is a game I’ll never forget,” said Webb.

“It will stay long with me because the game should have been over.

“To lose was very hard to take but I know the players we have here have got good character.

“They were all down afterwards and if they aren’t hurting after that then I don’t want them at the club.”

Connor Waldon gave Marine a dream start when he found the net in the opening minute but it did not take Evesham long to respond through George Washbourne.

Visiting stopper Sawyer was then shown a straight red for a foul in the box and Chris Taylor put Marine back in front from the penalty spot.

Corey King made it 3-1 on the 25-minute mark but from there Marine began to fall apart as Ashley Edenborough’s goal gave Evesham a lifeline before half-time.

Nick Stanley brought the visitors level half-an-hour into the second half and Evesham then snatched all three points in dramatic fashion as Matt Sysum found the net in the dying seconds.

Webb added: “We knew we were up against a good side and we started the game exactly as we needed to.

“We conceded an equaliser but the game took a massive turn when their keeper was sent off.

“At 3-1 we had chances to get a fourth goal and if we’d done that then I’m sure the game would have been over.

“An error then let them back into the game to get to 3-2 and from that moment on it galvanised them into a performance, whereas we lost our way. We just couldn’t get going again.

“When it goes 3-3 you fear the worst and then sure enough with just a few minutes left they go and score again.”

It is the third game in a row that Marine have been left to rue a late goal following a draw at Shortwood United and defeat at Stratford Town.

Webb said: “The back four has got two 18-year-olds in it as we’ve got a lot of senior players missing with injury.

“That’s not an excuse as those players have done well but it’s about consistency. When you’re young it’s hard as you are still learning.

“We are where we are. We’ll go back to training on Tuesday now and look to regroup.”
