FIXTURE congestion has its upsides, according to New College head coach Matt Cosnett.

College, who play at Supermarine Road, didn’t have a midweek home game until January 9 but are in action on every Monday in March barring one, as well as the first Monday of April.

Four days ago, they thrashed Milton United 5-1 thanks to goals from Alex Fenton, Tom Johnston, Ben Lodge, Max Slinn and Louis O’Shea and on Saturday, 14th-placed College host Letcombe, who are 12th in the Hellenic League Division One West table.

Then, on Monday, College roll out the red carpet for Woodstock Town but Cosnett isn’t complaining.

“Because we share with the rugby club, we haven’t always been able to get on the ground, so a lot of our games have been moved to Monday nights,” said the College chief. “That’s worked out a lot better for us though and meant that we can get a lot more of the stronger second-years involved.

“A lot of them play on Thursday nights and work on Tuesdays but they’re usually free on Mondays.

“A lot of those guys have done really well and Tom Johnston has probably been the standout one in the last few weeks.

“Letcombe will be difficult because they’ve got a few lads that can play and then we’ve got Woodstock.

“They’re a side that are below us but you can’t just look at the league table. Cheltenham Saracens were down there but they’ve started winning a few matches.

“It’s going to be a really busy weekend because the U18s have also got a semi-final in the Wiltshire Youth Cup on Sunday against Bradford Town.”

Meanwhile, table-topping title-chasers Fairford Town, who are unbeaten in 10 league matches, will be looking to take another step towards sealing top spot when they host second-bottom Woodstock.

Purton take on North Leigh at the Red House while Shrivenham, who were beaten 1-0 by Finchampstead in the Supplementary Cup on Wednesday night, welcome Milton.
