Swindon Borough Council has big plans for the town this year.

Not only does the local authority hope to draw up a new 20-year local plan, but it has other plans too.

These include a 'box park' for big events, progress on a new theatre, and the opening of the new Swindon Museum and Art Gallery.

But, while these all sound like worthy endeavours what it is that Swindon Advertiser readers would like to see priorities in the town.

We collected some of the best responses to this very question below, although it is worth noting that not all of these will be within the council's control.

Paul Head said: "Big investment in outreach work and youth centres and such."

Rebecca Celia said: "Any form of entertainment other than pubs and a community centre or the occasional pop up funfair."

Gordon McKay said: "The simple answer in my opinion is reduce the footprint of retail, encourage more flats and hotels, offer more and cheaper (if not free for a time period) parking, and then let the remaining space rejuvenate itself with higher demand and increase in footfall."

Kirsty Terri Louise Davies: "A clean town plus a nice variety of shops and also sort out building above train station also Debenhams building."

Matthew Clements said: "Cleaning up the town centre, making it safer which is also down to the police.

"This town could be really nice bit it’s such a shame what it’s become."

Niall McDonald said: "Bath will be nervous at the thought of the Swindon Xmas Market opening up.

"New theatre/music venue would potentially save me having to travel to London/Bristol/Cardiff to see anything half decent.

"Reopening of the Oasis is still firmly in the 'never gonna happen' file for me though.

"Radical idea - some decent lighting and refurbished car parks at the station so you don't get off a train in the dark and feel you are taking your life in your hands walking to your car."

James White said: "Cleaning the town and surrounding areas properly, so that people feel welcome , at times it looks a real dump. Paths and surfaces need addressing

"Fleming way needs progress by end of year also."

Carleigh McGovern said: "Bring back funding for youth clubs and schemes in the town that have been lost to give our children a safe place to socialise, stay out of trouble and seek support if needed.

"We need an event space to give people a reason to visit Swindon creating revenue for the town.

"Lower commercial rent to encourage new retailers to the Town centre.

"Town itself needs an uplift and just get Fleming way finished to encourage more foot fall it's depressing.

"Additional SEN schools. So many children with additional needs are going to mainstream school and not having their needs met as the setting is not equipped for them which in turn all students education suffers."

Lindsay Kimberley Ryan said: "Sort out the county lines issue and knife crime."

Neil Pitcher said: "The town centre is a disgrace, would rather drive to Bristol Cabot Circus or even Newbury has a better selection of shops than Swindon town centre."

Gillian Smith said: "More street cleaners and some shop owners need to be spoken to about the mess outside their shops."

Peter Thurland said: "Build a new hospital not housing. The current one GWH can’t cope with the amount of new people living in the new housing."

Mike Oxland-Harvey said: "I just want to see an improvement for how things have been in the last 13 years or so."
