A WIDER range of shops and more activities for young people are just some of the things people want to see in Swindon over the next 20 years.

Opinions were canvassed between June and September last year and have now been collated to form A Shared Vision for Swindon 2008-2030.

Priorities identified by the scheme include making Swindon more attractive for visitors and residents, including more activities for young people and improved arts activities.

A more sustainable transport system and more independent stores, were also identified as a priority. People of all ages were asked to give feedback on a consultation document compiled by the Swindon Strategic Partnership (SSP).

In Spring a 12-month action plan will be drawn up, setting out key tasks for local organisations to help realise the vision.

Council leader Rod Bluh is presenting the strategy at the SSP conference at the Oakfield Campus this morning.

He said: "This important document is the ultimate vision of how local people want their borough to be.

"Thank you to everyone who gave their views which have helped shape this exciting, ambitious set of aspirations.

"From this big picture, all types of organisations will be working hard to help make this vision a reality."

Tom Charnock, chairman of the SSP Overview and Monitoring Group, said it was important that as many people as possible had their say.

He said: "By taking the roadshows to where people shop, take part in sport or go for a walk, we were able to involve people who may not normally fill out questionnaires or attend a public meeting.

"Looking ahead, local people also have a big part to play in helping to achieve the strong, caring communities desired by so many. We look forward to engaging with more community groups and developing stronger relationships with them as we work towards achieving this vision."

Copies of the strategies can be downloaded at www.swindonsp.org.uk. Video interviews gathered by teenagers from YourFilm can also be viewed on the site.

A purpose built, state of the art music/live event venue.

It's what Swindon needs most and what Swindon has needed most for the past 25 years.

It would provide decent, on-going employment, would enhance culture in the town, improve access to the arts, put the town on the map nationally and also, of course, would provide leisure an recreation activities that are sorely lacking in the town.

Frankly, we'd have been far better off leaving the library in those cabins and using the money to build such a venue - especially as a venue generates revenue, a library generates zilch.

Totally agree. A performance / music venue is badly needed.

I can see no negatives to it.

Looks like the Canal's a done deal if you look at the picture on the front of the brochure that Bluh is holding.

as long as it's not the same old stuff with same old covers etc.
if it serves to display and encourage original bands and artists then it would make sense.
if it is supposed to be a derivate of what we have already here, it's wasted money.

Not necessarily, Halcrow's feasibility study is on the SBC website and there are a lot of if's! mainly the transport plan needs to be approved, money needs to be raised and a public consultation. Interesting also is that Halcrow are saying it will cost a base figure of £52m and it's also only stage 1, there is a stage 2 involving Bruce St Bridges and Moulden Hill to link it to Cricklade.

Sorry! my comment related to the canal on the brochure and I agree a music venue is desperately needed.

I think a music venue would be wicked for swindon we have the oasis but this is on such a small scale. Myself and my friends always have to travel when we want to see a band etc etc. We need something in swindon that all ages could enjoy.

I am a great fan of libraries, and it has been one of the things pointed out as making us as a town inferior to other places. However I agree totally as regards a large music / live event venue.

I would go further - I can remember people moaning about the lack as far back as the late 60s early 70s - I also remember the excitement over the idea of the Wyvern Theatre, and the dissappointment when everyone realised that it would be nowhere near big enough to attract big names / big crowds.
