CREATING a fun learning environment is one of the main aims of Nythe Primary School.

Headteacher Bethan Fry aims to make sure every pupil enjoys their time, while being fully prepared for the next stage of education.

The school also looks to involve everyone around the school as their motto is Achieving More Together.

“We think it is important to work as a team,” said Jenni Akroyd, one of the school’s two assistant headteachers.

“The school staff, children and parents all work together to achieve a fun learning environment.

“We are very proud of our family learning days, where parents come into the school on Saturdays with their children.”

All the teachers put a lot of effort into brightening up lessons so pupils develop an enjoyment of learning.

Going into school has therefore become a rich and rewarding experience for the children.

Each term the school devises a topic through which the whole curriculum is taught.

Jenni, who has been at the school for 12 years, said: “This term we have had a Secrets And Spies theme and have put this into lessons on all the subjects.

“We have used it in maths, literacy, history and artwork.

“We recently went to the Coleshill Second World War bunker as well, which the children all enjoyed.”

The school, which has 171 pupils, gives each class an animal name.

Year one is the Zebra Class and year two is the Giraffe Class. On top of that, the school is divided into four houses.

“Each house is assigned a colour and named after one of the planets – Mercury, Mars, Saturn and Neptune,” said Jenni “It provides a fun level of competition and we award the house cup at the end of the year.”

The school has a very strong ethos in environmental education and has an Eco Action Team that aims to encourage the children to consider all things green.

Pupils are also taught the school’s eco-code, with many lessons taught in the school garden.

Many of the children also took part in the Bike It Day, which promoted fitness as well as green issues.

They cycled to school with their parents, and received breakfast when they arrived.

“It is a lovely school and a very happy place,” said Jenni. “All the staff and parents are supportive of each other.”
