THE news that Tony Blair is proposing to replace the Trident nuclear weapons system with an even more deadly and expensive system is really alarming.
He went to war in Iraq on the pretext of removing weapons of mass destruction from Saddam Hussein. He cannot now say he is making the world a safer place by upgrading Trident in contravention of the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty.
If as he keeps telling us terrorism is our main security threat, nuclear missiles based in submarines are not going to deter would-be enemies.
It will only encourage states like North Korea and Iran to continue with their nuclear programmes making the world and ourselves less safe.
