I was sorry to read (SA, December 22) that some, presumably Christian, parents are asking to withdraw their children from lessons that would teach the basic tenets of Islam.
The apprehension and suspicion that exist between some members of both faiths can only be allayed by obtaining a knowledge of the beliefs of those seen to be the enemy'.
I would urge all Christian parents to let their children learn about Islam and all Muslim parents to ensure their children understand where Christianity differs from their own faith. It might surprise both parents and children how much the two faiths have in common.
Understanding each other is the way forward to a happier and more secure future for all.
