BOOKWORMS at Swindon's new library could be ordering a shot of Shakespeare or a pint of Potter.

Young people will be able to gossip about their favourite authors while relaxing with a cappuccino at the library's new Book Bar-all.

The Lottery's Young People's Fund has awarded Swindon Libraries the money funding to set up a book bar for youngsters at the new Central Library, which is due to be completed next year.

Twenty book bars are being set up across the UK as a place where youngsters can chill out and read their favourite books and magazines while being served by book waiters.

They will be given the chance to choose the furniture and books that are featured there.

They can also volunteer as book waiters and work with library staff to ensure everyone receives a warm welcome.

In return, anyone who gets actively involved will be able to gain formal accreditation for their contribution through schemes like the Youth Achievement Award.

The idea for the bars came from youngsters in Derbyshire, known as the Book Pushers, who wanted to create a laid-back environment, which would encourage a love of reading and books.

Miranda McKearney, director of the Reading Agency, said: "Book bars are a fresh new idea which we hope will entice loads of young people to get involved with their local library and develop a love of books and reading.

"We can't wait to start working with Swindon Borough Libraries to get the Central Library book bar up and running."

The Reading Agency has been awarded £575,000 for the project and Swindon Council will receive £8,400 capital and £15,000 to support the bar's development.

The project will run from April 2007 until March 2010 and the Swindon book bar will open in the summer of 2008.

Coun Justin Tomlinson, cabinet member for culture, leisure and recreation, said: "This is a great way for young people in Swindon to get involved in creating an important new local venue for young people.

"I hope all different kinds of young people will get involved in this project, as it offers a terrific opportunity to develop new skills, increase confidence and meet new friends in Swindon's exciting new library."
