SCOTLAND fans living in Swindon will wear their kilts with pride this weekend.

The Scots are just a win away from qualifying for their first major tournament in 10 years and the Tartan Army are feeling quietly confident of their chances of beating their Italian counterparts.

Brothers Gary and Paul Donnelly think it is possible Scotland can make next year's Euro 2008 Championships in Austria and Switzerland.

"I'm looking forward to the game, but with trepidation," said 35-year-old Gary from Stratton.

"Scotland are used to being the underdog and now we are in a position to qualify.

"I have a £10 bet on that we will win 2-1."

Paul, 30, from St Andrew's Ridge, said: "I'll be watching the game at home. I'm hoping we'll get a result but it won't be an easy ride.

"It's a massive opportunity for us and I think playing at Hampden in front of the Tartan Army will act like an extra man.

"Having said that you can't knock the quality of the Italian team - they are World Cup winners.

"My heart is telling me it will be 1-0 to Scotland but we have to be solid at the back and not make any stupid mistakes."

Scotland beat France home and away in the qualifying campaign, but a victory over Italy would rank as one of the country's all-time greatest results.

Gordon Wilson, 66, pictured, is the president of the Swindon Caledonian Society.

He said: "I think it will be a hard fought game but I would hope Scotland clinch it. I'll be supporting them all the way.

"I'll definitely be watching and I'm going for a 2-1 win to us."

The Tap and Barrel pub in Manchester Road is expected to be full of fans when the game kicks off at 5pm on Saturday.

Landlady Lyn Hurwood said: "It's great to see they're doing so well. When they beat France the pub was packed out."

BBC Radio Swindon presenter Sandy Martin thinks Scotland have a great chance of making it through.

Born in Dundee and now living in Shaw, he describes himself as a "plastic jock" having moved to Swindon in the 1970s.

"I would love them and England to qualify," he said.

"It will be a very tight game and probably not pretty to watch.

"I think the wonder boy McFadden will score in a 1-0 win."
