Plans for a new train service that will take Swindon passengers directly to Oxford are underway.

If approved the Great Western Railway service would add two return journeys between Bristol Temple Meads and Oxford.

This would stop at Bath Spa, Chippenham and Swindon, taking at least one hour and 11 minutes from beginning to end.

Although the initial plans are for this to only happen every Saturday starting in September this year.

If brought in, it would mean residents from Swindon would not need to change at Didcot Parkway to travel to Oxford.

The plans come in response to a growing demand for leisure travel by train and would be the first direct service between the Bristol and Oxford since 2003.

But how do people of this historic railway town feel about this news? Are people excited for this new public travel option or are they sceptical?

We collected some of the best responses to the story on our Facebook page.

Stacey Renouf said: "Would be great if they were reliable and ran on time (or ran at all!)"

Rose Clarke said: "Brilliant! Do hope this happens!"

Mavis Joseph said: "Lovely way easier for me."

Richard Hodder said: "Wasn't that tried a few years back with Class 165s?"

Dean Teifel said: "It was great when they did it and worked really well. Was so easy to take a bike on the train with the 165 service and not the rubbish way now."

Christine Ings said: "About time too, great."

Alan Chippy Pellymounter said: "How about a direct route to Birmingham New Street? which is possible.

"Instead of bearing left to Gloucester, how about carrying straight on to Cheltenham and then onto Birmingham."

Gavin George said: "That's brilliant it normally takes 46 minutes."

Daryll Price said: "It's only £2.00 each way on the bus, cheaper than Great Western Railway."

Carter Joyner said: "I take the train regularly to Banbury and this would make my life significantly easier.

"This service is needed now and on weekdays too so I'm not sure why they're only running it until December and only on Saturdays - that's not enough.

"This would be so much better than having to change at Oxford rather than Didcot and Oxford."

Lauren Smith said: "Being able to get to Oxford easily will really help me out.

"I hope they bring this service in and I hope it sticks around longer than they're planning.

"But I guess it all depends how much the tickets will be."

Fran Storrington said: "I can't remember the last time I took a train anywhere, but this is good news for other people I suppose."

Scot Expat said: "If they make it a similar price to Bath/Bristol/Cardiff, I suppose it is alright, but if they charge the Redditch/London price then nobody will use it unless they are well off."

Terrence Phelps said: "This is a good idea, I hope they take it on board.

"But what GWR really, really needs to do is find a way to make its services cheaper for people as I know for a fact a lot of people I know would use a train instead if it was cheaper for them to do so."

Sharon Lewis said: "They had something similar a while ago and it ended up going away.

"If they bring it back I hope the same thing doesn't happen again."

Jon Davies said: "I travel that way every so often so will probably be giving it a go if they do bring it in."
