THE Challenge Swindon - Festival Of Sport has launched its appeal for participants by getting on the buses.

The community sports tournament on June 2 and 3 is organised by Swindon Council and it is being advertised on the back of Thamesdown Transport buses.

Posters and flyers are also being sent to businesses and public venues in and around the borough.

The council's cabinet member for leisure, culture and recreation, Justin Tomlinson, urged as many people as possible to join in.

"Challenge Swindon - Festival Of Sport is a fantastic opportunity for friends, family and work colleagues to get together and get active," Coun Tomlinson said.

"You don't need to be an athlete. It is all about taking part and having fun."

From basketball to squash, swimming to hockey, golf to football, there is something for adults of all abilities.

Participants can try their hand at beach volleyball, dragon boat racing, speed climbing or even kabbadi - a team sport from south Asia.

The community sports tournament will be followed by a Get Active Week from June 4 to 10 which will be open to everyone.

The Swindon Advertiser is the main media sponsor for the sporting extravaganza but there are still opportunities for businesses to give their support.

Challenge Swindon includes more than 20 different activities and will be spread over 12 leisure venues across the borough, including Broome Manor Golf Course, Coate Water, County Ground Lifestyle Centre, Croft Sports Centre, Dorcan Recreation Centre, Haydon Centre, Link Centre, Moulden Hill, Oasis Leisure Centre, St Mark's Tennis Centre, Supermarine Sports and Social Club, Centre Fitness and Swindon Karting Centre.

Many of the sports are team events, so the council is urging people to get together with friends, family and work colleagues.

To register a team go online at www.challengeswindon.org.uk or call Team Swindon on 01793 511033.

Businesses who are interested in sponsoring the event should telephone Bev Rawlings on 01793 465200.
