UPDATED: Rooney makes Rotherham switch
3:57pm Friday 9th November 2012 in Sport
Luke Rooney
SWINDON winger Luke Rooney has joined Rotherham United on loan this afternoon.
The deal takes Rooney to the New York Stadium for two months, after the winger returned from a similiar spell with Burton Albion.
The former Gillingham man has struggled for first-team football at the County Ground this season, and he has not featured under Paolo Di Canio since a 45-minute cameo in the 4-1 defeat at Preston, during which he watched the second period with the away fans after being substituted.

So Rooney lasted about 6 months after signing for a 6 figure fee. Shame as I thought he was dangerous.

.
He set up Benson on his debut in a 1-0 win and then followed that up with 2 goals and about 7 or 8 further assists - some important ones like against Crawley
.
He also offered us a different option to the usual marked out right side
.
OK he was probably not a vital as Benson or keeping Wes but certainly gave us a boost and helped significantly in that 10 game winning streak!
.
Also how is it wasted money - Rotherham may end up buying him as they have cash (not just from big sales like Grabbon either) so we could recoup some if not all we spent
.
He obviously is a top L2 player and possible a average L1 player - which is not what we want
.
I thought he would develop more and offer us what RDV is - but that has not happened for whatever reason
.
Also how is it wasted money - Rotherham may end up buying him as they have cash (not just from big sales like Grabbon either) so we could recoup some if not all we spent?
.
Good luck to him and hope he does secure a move to help fund any future moves we may want to make in Jan
.
Sean - don't think the summer was the issue but his performances this year (and likely reaction after i.e. Preston sitting in the stands!) that blew it for him

In my opinion he is equally as good or as bad as Raffaele De Vita and Gary Roberts, with probably more potential than both of them.

I also believe that as a club we have turned the screw, thanks to pdc, we now use the players to get what we need. Ie promotion. Instead of players using us to elevate themselves. I think you would recognise this in business, where a line manager will get what they need out of an employee, because they are aware that loyalty unfortunately lies thin. So why shouldnt pdc use/utilise his employees how he sees fit. Fine by me.

Which Luke Rooney was going to turn up on the day ? Worth having a guess or go for a more reliable player and not have to waste a substitute. My guess is the latter.
Shame as I enjoyed watching him in full flow.

I am aware that Luke Rooney divides opinion amongst most Town Fans, but for my part I thought that he was an exciting signing by Paolo in the first place, and I really think that Luke has not been given regular games to show his talent with us. In my opinion he is equally as good or as bad as Raffaele De Vita and Gary Roberts, with probably more potential than both of them.

NOT HAVEING ENOUGH OPTIONS..? Then we loan out Caddis and Rooney...
I know they were loaned out be4 the injuries but at least Rooney could and should have been called back..
At least that would have given paolo another option..

Skilful but not the strongest or the quickest. A decent L2 player on his day and had his moments last year but I'm not sure he's good enough for L1 at present.
Like the other signings last season he had to be given a 2year deal and as L/R said he did what was asked last season. Although he had a 2 year deal he was never gonna be here for that period.

Think possibly paolo is forward thinking. Maybe he knows luke is not ready for championship. But when we go up, he at least helps luke out by giving him options, and clubs in lg1, possibly, laughably, the gills may even buy him back next season. At an elevated cost. I could be way off the mark, but we all know how pdc works now. I think securing madine would be great also, even if it is just so he can do a job and get us up.

Yes we have injury issues but that doesn't mean Luke Rooney can fill in at fullback, centre back or even centre midfield
.
It may come to a surprise to some but we have NOT sent our entire £4.5m budget for the year
.
Footballers don't receive a lump sum up front - they get paid monthly like most people!
.
So by loaning him out and therefore not paying him X for that period it reduces our total PROJECTED bill - thus more to spend elsewhere
.
We have Ritchie Roberts and RDV out wide and only Ferry in the middle so it makes sense to loan out 4th winger out to secure another central midfielder
.
I would love to see him given a chance like lots of decent guys - but if promotion is your aim then you can't show sentiment
.
The sooner fans realise that the better!
.
Do you want development or promotion!?
.
It is extremely rare you get both!
.
Once we are up - then we can look to develop as the target will be 50 points not 90 odd!

Shame about Luke Rooney would have liked to have seen him given more chances especially after Paolo raved about him so much and chased hard after him. Lack of consistency played its part as he could be very exciting or downright garbage but I thought Paolo was going to improve him. Wonder who the two midfielders are as J Greenings name keeps coming up.

I see Madine is playing for Sheff Wed tonight due to injury to Ogrady apparently. Looks a bit like Lee Peacock I suppose and big lad and got 18 goals last season in Div 1. It was said on broadcast that he was possibly due to go out on loan and he was mentioned this evening on BBC Wilts stating it was too late to bring him in this week.

Never put in a good performance away from home.
Need better quality if we are to progress. Harsh but true so lets get real.
If you want to move through the leagues in rapid succession (dare I say a 3 year plan) then you are going to have casualties.

All these players that he has signed, using all the budget that he was given, then moan and groan about them being not up to standard. Well they are his choices, and on recent performances I would ? why he thinks they are up to our standard. Not a lot look very good on recent performances. Not gonna name them, but Wes & Macca look amongst the best
I don't like all the public humiliation of players either. This should be behind closed doors. Rant over. COMYR.

A few games into his Swindon career Luke Rooney played against Crawley at the CG and had constant verbal altercations with Steve Evans every time they were anywhere near each other. I can't remember now whether Luke scored or it was another Town player but when Town scored he ran and jumped and celebrated in from of Steve Evans.
Now, less than a year later, Luke has moved to Rotherham on loan. Managed by none other than Steve Evans. Funny how things change.
Just thought I'd let you lot into a little secret.

When Luke was at Gills last season they played Crawley, who were managed by Steve Evans. I believe they won and a scuffle broke out in the tunnel and Evans and Rooney had an altercation with the latter forcefully pushing the other.

He cost STFC a lot of money and is now floating around on loan to other clubs. Why?
Is he going to join the Clarke, Caddis, Kerrouche, Smith, Connnell etc club? Why?
I suspect I'm not the only one asking these questions. I guess the Board must be asking the same. Why?
