BOXING: Mayo expecting a knockout show

SWINDON boxing promoter Keith Mayo believes his next show will be his best yet.

Penhill favourite Kelvin Young tops the March 9 bill, defending his Southern Area super middleweight title at the Oasis Leisure Centre.

Mayo is confident Young will deliver a top performance and bounce back from his defeat against Tony Hill back in October.

But the promoter is also excited about the boxers he has booked to support the main event.

Swindon boxers Danny O’Reilly, Lawrence Bennett and Joe Beeden are all scheduled to fight on the March bill.

O’Reilly returns to the ring following defeat in his debut fight back in October while undefeated Bennett looks to make it four consecutive wins.

Beeden, a former amateur from Fitzpatrick’s Boxing Gym, has just turned professional with Mayo and makes his debut on the March show.

“I’m really looking forward to this show,” said Mayo. “It’s the first one of 2013 and I think this one could be my best yet.

“Kelvin Young is obviously back after his defeat last time out.

“He’ll be defending his Southern Area title and we are looking for him to get back to winning ways against a tough opponent.

“We also have several local boxers on the bill including Joe Beeden, who has just signed professional forms with me, and is an exciting prospect.

“I’d describe him as a little terrier in the ring.

“He has no fear and he should be exciting to watch.”

Also expected to put on a show is Reading’s Tamuka Mucha - described by his trainer Chris Saniger as “the next big thing”.

Mucha fought on the last Swindon show in October and Mayo is delighted to welcome him back, adding: “It’s great to have Mucha back in Swindon.

“He is a star in the making and proved that with his display last time out.

“He will definitely be one of the fights of the night.”

The remainder of the bill is completed by Lydney favourites Chris Higgs and Lewis Van Poetsch, Gloucester’s Todd Roberts, Bath’s Mike Rose, Bicester’s Daza Usher and Malmesbury’s Joe Hughes.

“I am expecting a sell-out for this show,” added Mayo.

“It’s my first show of the year and every fight has the potential to be explosive.

“There is a nice mix of boxers on the bill. Kelvin Young and Chris Higgs bring the experience to the table while the likes Joe Beeden, Lewis Van Poetsch and Danny O’Reilly are just starting in the pro ranks.

“All the boxers on the bill come to fight which should make for a night of quality boxing.”

Tickets are now on sale and are priced at £35 standard and £60 VIP ringisde.
