TOWN TAKEOVER: Black is out and McCrory is in as contracts exchanged

Departing owner Andrew Black Departing owner Andrew Black

THE takeover of Swindon Town is almost complete, after a consortium led by Banbury United owner Jed McCrory struck a deal to assume control at the County Ground.

Swindon’s majority shareholder, Andrew Black, has been keen to part with a large chunk of his 98 per cent stake in the club for several months and the Betfair founder confirmed a fortnight ago that he was looking to sell up.

After rapid negotiations, which began with seven interested parties of which two were believed to be foreign investors, an initial agreement was reached with McCrory’s group yesterday - securing the club’s stability and avoiding the prospect of administration.

The takeover came in the nick of time for the Robins, who had already contracted experts to assist in the financial restructuring of the club should negotiations break down. In their preparations for the worst-case scenario, the Adver understands a letter had been sent out to members of the Football League stating that the entire Swindon squad was available for transfer.

Thankfully for everyone involved with the club that eventuality never came to pass, as the relevant paperwork was signed on Wednesday morning meaning the sale of players was no longer essential.

In order to facilitate the successful handover of power at the County Ground, the Advertiser understands the debts in the club’s holding company, Swindon Football Holdings Limited, will be written off.

That money, believed to total between £9.5million and £10million, is owed to Black, Fitton, Sir Martyn Arbib and Jeremy Wray.

An outstanding amount remains in secured debts.

A statement issued by the club last night read: “The board of Swindon Town FC are pleased to announce its majority shareholder, Andrew Black, has today exchanged contracts with a consortium to acquire the club. Completion of the sale is dependent upon approval from the Football League, which we hope to obtain in the next few days.

“Upon completion, most of the club’s existing debt will be written off, the threat of administration will be avoided and Paolo Di Canio and the squad will be able to concentrate on football and the challenge of making Swindon a Championship club next season.”

McCrory’s intervention could have prevented severe repercussions at the County Ground. Had Town slipped into administration it would be their third “offence” this century and could have incurred a significant points penalty, or worse, from the Football League.

McCrory, only took over at Banbury in the summer of last year but it is understood that he may have to relinquish his position at the Oxfordshire club to satisfy FA regulations regarding dual ownership.

McCrory could receive special dispensation to hold roles at both Town and Banbury until the end of the season.

Never a dull moment at STFC. I wonder if it is a "Black day"?

Now we have new owners we need to know the future plans for the club and do they include our best ever (IMO) manager PDC. I really hope we can get into the Championship with PDC in control. Top guy and a real crowd favourite.
In PDC we trust as for the new owners time will tell.

Like I warned yesterday when some posters were trumpeting in the new 'investors'. Let's see what their motives are.

The first move - Sell arguably our best player to one of our closest promotion rivals for peanuts.
DO I NOT LIKE THIS!

Lets just see.......

If PDC Stays.........no-one else will go.

If he goes............16th place in league 1 this season.

Funny how they say

'Upon completion, most of the club’s existing debt will be written off, the threat of administration will be avoided and Paolo Di Canio and the squad will be able to concentrate on football and the challenge of making Swindon a Championship club NEXT season'

So, they know this season is now written off.

I can see Williams, Collins going for sure. Fodds.....Hmmmm, not sure

Anyone else??

Yeah, just a huge contradiction in this story, no need to sell players because the deal was sealed yesterday morning, so we sell a key player for a third of his worth to our rival. Theres more to this than meets the eye. no need to sell so why has ritchie gone for peanuts

Well, by the players own admission;

He say; he left Portsmouth when they started to have uncertain times...

I think the truth be known......

He thought the worst...by that i mean he thought STFC were going into 'A'
and made contact through his agent last week.......

Wouldnt surprise me if he jumped a tad to early.......

He approached AFCB (through agent)
thats why he went for 400k.........

Just my opinion.....

We can't be a Championship club until next season, when the season starts. The challenge is this season, though.

I spose it could be one of those glass half full/empty things.

I'm trying to be positive! ;-)

Imagine if you walked into a new job and you started getting abuse for something the guy you replaced had done. You'd be pretty annoyed?

so why are you absolute muppets slamming the new owners before they've even officially taken charge huh?

Some of you even said, "but if the new consortium don't need to sell, why have we sold Ritchie for peanuts?". Are you seriously telling me you are so unbelievably stupid you can't figure it out?? The new lot didn't sell Ritchie, Andrew Black threw his toys out of the pram. Yeah the same guy who invested his money in a 2 year plan in June then decided he wanted to bail a quarter of the way through, despite the fact STFC sit third in the league.

If you're going to point fingers point them at him. He knows sod all about football, so of course he'd sell a top asset for peanuts. The new board would not have had enough control to see through the transaction.

If more players go it's down to Black. Sooner the FL approves this the better.

Nobody is slagging off the new owners, only questioning the sale of ritchie for nowhere near his value. Pretty clear its gonna cause a stink for PDC.

So we've lost Matt Ritchie, he's not irreplaceable. Ok we didn't get a huge amount of money for him but whats done is done so lets move on. With regards to the Championship why are we even talking about it? Surely we should be concerntrating on the here and now? We are currently 3rd in League 1 which for me is amazing, I love PDC and what he's done for the club and i believe once the deal is hopefully confirmed later on today we can move forward and keep going from strength to strength. This is not history repeating itself! This time we have a manager who is passionate we have back room staff and a board of officers who are dedicated in my mind this is only the beginning for Swindon and we still have bigger and better things to come! KTF people because Swindon really does count on your support, COYR :)

If you guys advertised a car, allowed the buyers to check it out thoroughly, agreed a price and exchanged contracts, would you not be pee'd off to find the seller had sold the engine??
The new owners had to know and agree to Ritchie being sold, so they are either:
1) as much to blame for letting a key player go after yesterday insisting they dont want to sell him.
2) have someone already lined up as a replacement.
Again glass full/empty, but you cant pin all this on Black. The buyers go through due diligence, scrutinizing accounts and assets. They had to agree to the sale.

If every time a major event happened and you weren't allowed to discuss it, only 'move on because it's happened' then there would be no forums or message boards or news channels on anything.

There are indeed questions that need answering. The Adver doesn't always choose its words well, or have any inside channel to the club, which is why people on here speculate or read between the lines.

As I said on another thread, Andrew Black has sold Ritchie, at a knockdown price, to keep the club solvent as we are losing somewhere between £30,000-50,000 a week and that money has to be found somewhere, from someone. The new owners didn't sell Ritchie, but it shows they don't have money to 'invest' either.

Becca84 says...
9:52am Thu 31 Jan 13

I'm not saying let's NOT discuss it, I'm all for freedom of speech, i'm just sharing my opinion like everyone else and i personally feel that there is no point in speculating until we get all the facts. I believe there is still bigger and better things to come from Swindon but all in good time.

My thoughts are like this, if football league approval takes a few days and past the 31st Jan then that leaves us in the lurch regarding funds and Black will not put any more money in and the new consortium who have funds would want football league approval first before commiting their funds because what if the FL block the move. This is why Ritchie had to be sold only concrete offer on the table. Patey had said last night PDC and the squad can now concentrate on the football and in trying to get us into the championship. I am sure Paolo will still be here and Ritchie was the unfortunate sacrifice which could have been any of half a dozen players. Ritchie has been a fantastic player for us no doubt but last few months he has been no where near his best and even out of sorts with may be just the Tranmere game where he was unplayable. It seems common knowledge that Matt is buying new property in Fareham so was he already looking for a move. Can he be replaced I would say yes and Rafa and Roberts with a new signing would give us the cover no problem. I would even keep Luke Rooney and try and get the lads head right cause he is one messed up dude but does have the talent.

wraxall says...
10:20am Thu 31 Jan 13

sorry to see Matt go but perhaps
he was looking for his long term future and the fact that the only club who has made an offer is B'mouth he decided to
agree a large signing on fee ,double his wages keep his wife happy but staying on the south coast. If the club has got
£500k nett and B'mouth are paying the agreed add-ons to Portsmouth this would push the fee nearer to £600-£700
k as Matt would have got 10% of the fee
Best of luck to him perhaps he thinks he has reached his limit and a 3.5 year deal on £8k per week is the best option

Let's not get too down about Ritchie. He was a very good player for us but he wasn't a fantastic player. Good luck to him. I'm sure PdC will have agreed this move as one of a range of options discussed at the club to provide some short term liquidity. I wouldn't expect too much else to happen today. PdC must have a plan and the club has to start balancing the books after the financial mess that JW created. What really concerns me is how much extra (after writing off the 10m) do McCrory and his 'merry men' have to invest in the future of the club?

Great post Di and now what with seemingly interest in Pack from Cheltenham and winger Green from Charlton things might get a lot better for us.
Just my view PDC maybe reluctantly agreed to the Ritchie move to get 2-3 players in,who i might add might be as good as Ritchie, and also secure the loan signings.
