TOWN TAKEOVER: McCrory leaves behind ambitious plans to move to Town

JED McCrory will have to leave behind an ambitious five-year plan to get Banbury United into the Football League to take control of Swindon Town.

The businessman is set to swap life in the Southern Premier for a League One promotion fight after his consortium reached an agreement to take over at the County Ground, subject to Football League approval.

He will be allowed to continue his interest in both clubs until the summer, when it is expected he will be required to cut his ties with the non-league club to ensure he abides by FA and Football League regulations which don’t allow an individual to have interests in more than one English side.

Roy Mold is interim-chairman of the Banbury United Supporters Club and, while he is shocked to see the man who has rejuvenated his club move on after only six months, declared McCrory as the best man he has ever worked with.

“He has told us his ambition was to get Banbury into the Football League inside five years, and hopefully he will put something in place which will allow us to carry on with that, or someone else will come in,” he said.

“It’s a bit of a shock to all of us, but we will look at it as being his decision because of course what he does is up to him. He certainly will be missed here though.

“Knowing Jed as I do, I am convinced he will call a supporters meeting to explain exactly what he is doing and why, and I don’t think there will be anything but good will for him.

“He has done a lot for the club, and I have worked alongside him ever since he came here and everything he has done is for the good of the club.

“He always listens to the supporters, and you have to say he has turned the club around.

“I have never worked with a better man. There is no other man who could have done what he has done, because he has worked so hard for the good of Banbury.”

During his brief spell in Oxfordshire, McCrory has invested in improving the facilites at the Spencer Stadium. He has also spent money to improve the squad by loaning talented youngsters from the likes of Reading and Peterborough, which has seen the Puritans rise to 12th in the table, despite starting the season without a win in eight games.

Mold believes McCrory is a true football fan, and insisted stories of him buying pints of beer to entice new fans to Banbury were far from being publicity stunts of bribery. “He loves the game so much, and that isn’t always true of every chairman you meet,” he said. “He has of course been to our home matches, but he goes to most of the away ones too which shows how he is committed to the club, you won’t find many chairmen willing to do that at this level.

“Jed is a man who listens to people, and I can’t say enough about him.

“Some people don’t agree with his ideas but I support him.

“He did our clubhouse up and has also invested in the playing squad, and he has always been so open with the fans when he has been doing it.

“Some look at him buying drinks for the fans as being a form of bribery, but for Jed that is a form of thanks. He will always thank people.

“He is a very down to earth man, and what you see is what you get.

“There is none of this behind the scenes stuff with him.”

Well he seems the right kind of guy to me unlike our departing owner who had no intrest in football.
I'm not knocking Black but it's widely known he's not a football man.
I just hope that Jed doesn't sell anymore of our stars .

He may have more of an interest in football than AB but this new chap by his own admission had long term plans with Banbury only to bail after six months when another opportunity came along. I'm reserving judgement for the time being. Just because someone's a football fan doesn't mean they know a thing about how to run a club, nothing's been said about the financial clout the new owners could bring, and we've already lost our most valuable player (although to be fair this probably had most to do with the new owners and more to do with the player himself - however who agreed the deal? If AB's no longer in control are the new owners selling off their newly acquired assets? Clarification required on this)

Lots of uncertainty at the moment.

I'm fast coming to the conclusion that I prefer to be owned by a football fan and one who will buy into the club at every level - he will, if he continues the act of attending matches in such a manner, fast become a favourite amongst the fans....I'm certain Ritchie was sold to enable things to be transferred smoothly and without us entering Admin
.
He doesn't sound like the kind of asset stripper many fear and given his ambitions I'm just hoping that the consortium have the required funds to take a club the size of ours forward and that they haven't under-estimated the task.
.
I may be wide of the mark but PDC may even benefit from this move.
.
For the first time since SWP arrived I'm getting a pang of optimism about the security of our future...and hopeful that it will be back to the promotion chase.

I hate to be negative... but I am struggling with the last 24hrs.. All I can reasonably take from this article is;

1. 'Jed' has left Banbury in the s&%t. Anyone who has a "5 year plan" and drops it after 5yrs isnt someone I want at the helm of my club

2. I'd rather have Matt Richie at the town than be bought a beer.

As long as Pdc stays we'll be fine.

Louis- I genuinely love your glass is half full approach. It kept me going yesterday :-)

Mate,

Your welcome. I think we got today to get rid of Cox, Rooney(winger) and flint.......i said Collins and Williams earlier, but i now think Cox, Rooney and Flint may go.....

I think we'll get 2 or 3 loanees till the end of the season, and we'll become even better than we are now.....

PDC.......... One Word

Swindon clearly is more of a prospect than Banbury.
The new owners can't have any influence on transfers until the takeover has been aproved by the F.A. Black approved the sale of Ritchie after he got cold feet about going into admin.
I think Ritchie is the fly in the ointment here.

Why would Flint go as De Vera is injured and leaves us short if any other centre back gets injured.

Not happy at all with what is going on.

This new bloke is a Luton fans so i hope were not getting some second rate players from there or there poxy 2nd rate manager who is a L2 manager at best.

All negative thoughts at the moment and the sale of Ritchie has done it.

feel absolutely stitched up by AB

This Jed chap seems alright in my book. I have looked at Banbury and he has football grassroots at heart. Can't find anything negative about his time there, and by all accounts it was in a right mess. Has he got the financial clout we need? Doubt it personally but that why he is heading a consortium, there will be a money man, so at least 1 x money man and 1 x football loving dedicated individual should equal a good approach. Just my opinion. Lets see hat happens.....

I think some people might be a bit annoyed we've got someone we've never heard of from a tiny club. As I said earlier, and so have others, Jed's time at Banbury seems to have been positive.

My socks aren't blown off but my glass is half full. Three quarters, maybe. :)
