SWINDON TOWN: Di Canio hits back at recent accusations
9:24pm Friday 22nd February 2013 in Sport Exclusive By Sam Morshead
Paolo Di Canio has said he is seeking advice from his legal counsel
PAOLO Di Canio has hit back at a newspaper story and the Twitter remarks of Andrew Black which he feels “seem deliberately slanted to damage my reputation, and shift the blame onto me for the recent problems of STFC”.
In a statement released exclusively to the Advertiser, the Italian says a national newspaper’s report that Swindon Town were forced to change the locks after he returned to the County Ground at night to collect mementos of his stay is misleading.
He also rebukes the comments made by the Robins’ former majority shareholder on the social networking site last night, which gave the Betfair founder’s account of his tenure at the County Ground.
The statement ends with the phrase “for the moment I can make no further comment on this, as this matter is now in the hands of my legal advisors.”
It reads: “Unfortunately, at the moment it seems that I have to correct newspaper articles and other comments on a daily basis.
“These appear to stem from items leaked to the press by anonymous sources that seem to be inside or close to the Club. They are often either distorted versions of what actually happened or completely inaccurate. They all seem deliberately slanted to damage my reputation, and shift the blame onto me for the recent problems of STFC.
“Today, two stories have appeared.
“The first is suggesting that the Club have been obliged to change the locks because I broke into the County Ground and removed items to which I was not entitled., This is a complete distortion of what actually happened.
“When it became clear that my time at Swindon Town Football Club had come to an end, I decided that I would clear my office of my own personal items at a time when no one else was there. Although my Technical staff had stated their intention to resign after the Tranmere Game, it was agreed with a member of the old board that they would refrain from confirming this until after a meeting on Friday (today).
“I attended the County Ground with some of my Technical staff who were still employees of the club and entered into my office to remove my personal items, including some pictures that I had asked the club to produce personally for me. These pictures documented the time when I signed for the club and our first pre-season and were personal to me and would be of use to no one else other than myself as I am sure the new Manager would not want to look at my face every day he came into the office.
“There was no force used in anything we did and the following day, Fabrizio, along with some of my Technical staff went into the club to advise them of what we had done, offering to pay for the small amount of damage which occurred from the glue holding one part of the picture in place. This damage was so small that by the time they had attended the County Ground, it had already been repaired. I would stress that I did not take anything that belonged to the club.
“In addition to this, there were a number of items that fans had left for signature, which were signed and given to the club.
“The second matter concerns the comments made by Andrew Black last night on Twitter, which does not accurately describe what actually occurred and is a misleading version of events, which in the fullness of time, I will prove. However, for the moment I can make no further comment on this, as this matter is now in the hands of my legal advisors.”

you did amazing things for us and galvanised not only the club but the town as well. however this blame culture designed always around you and to protect your reputation is only doing you more harm than good.
the fact of the matter is that when the going got tough you got out, can't blame you for that, but you did.
time has moved on now, and we have new owners, and new people. it's time for you to move on to.
i guess this is about protecting what little reputation you have left after shafting the club by walking and taking your team with you.
thanks for the memories and the promotion, but ultimately thanks for walking and not costing us a packet to get rid of you. good luck in all you do.
stfc marches on, and I for one am pleased we have been saved again from administration and that we have passionate owners who may not have tens of millions of pounds, but who have football at their hearts.
we will succeed; lets stuff pne tomorrow.

The truth will come out sadly this will damage the reputation of the club.
The budget point will be raised very shortly and SWP will be exposed.
PDC - thanks for the great memories.
Looking forward to cheering on the
lads and back to football matters.
You have left a quality side for sure.

I hope this doesn't end up costing the club more money, but I suspect it will.
I just wish they'd speak to each other & settle it privately, rather than all this public airing of dirty laundry.

All Paolo had to do in my opinion was to sit tight, wait for the take over to go through or collapse, then make his move. Eigther he liked what Jed was offering and stay, or if he didn't like it, then go. If the deal collapsed then he could walk out.
In all options Paolo could have walked out any way he liked with his head held high, salute the fans and say I tried.
All of this fighting and back stabbing need not be taking place if a rational approach was followed. Paolo is hot headed and impulsive, but I feel he has been getting poor advice.
The Paolo era is over, no way is he going to come back, even if some thought he was. I would be one that would have liked him back, but the way this is all playing out in public is getting very bitchy. Too much has been said by both sides.
The only reason its still being reported is cos Paolo likes the attention and the media just love digging in the dirt. Tthe only people that are being hurt are JW, AB and PDC. Just let them get on with it.
I've given up caring, got more important things to think about now. STFC have got a title to win, so lets get on with the job in hand and win the bl00dy thing.

There is NO question of wrong doing in the legal sense as "he sought not to permanently deprive the owner of any goods", nor was there "breaking and entering" as he used keys issued.
All very sad after doing and achieving so much and having gain so much respect on the pitch with superb results. I've said before, since the embargo I thought he managed better and the team gelled better as the team almost picked itself and players had gained better understandings. Big pity to end it in a slanging match. If you are so straight and honest then why do you need a legal team ? because honesty always wins in adversity and it is self proving, so why hire solicitors etc.

Paolo, almost everyone has enjoyed your time with us and we're sad to see you leave. We don't want those memories spoilt by dragging this on any longer.
I would have loved you to stay but life always has a way of giving us a swift kick in the b*ll*cks when least expected.
I'm still gutted but it's time to move on.
New board, new plans and hopefully new investment. Wish you were here to lead us forward as I think you and your team are as good as it gets and with the new board, who knows where we could have gone.
Ciao.

For my part, up until a couple of days ago I would have welcomed him back with open arms. Now though, I don't know.

Thank you Paolo and I do not blame you for stating your side of the story which actually has been consistent all along IMO.

After this last few weeks they are to be commended for their professionalism in these difficult and testing times. Big shame we have lost the man who put us on top of the league, but we need to move on the leave those that have issues sort them out and leave the club out of it. We now have new owners and we must show our support to them, as well as gratitude for the old consortium who buried so much cash in this money pit, a lesson the new guys must learn from.
This is getting very messy now , paolo give up the ghost ! I so want you to still be in charge but it was your choice to leave , I will keep the memories of your time in charge close to my heart , but we now need to move on . Such an important game tomorrow , 3 points is a must . Good luck to Ward & Miller . COYR !

The only thing I ever really had issue with him over was, the name/shame/blame culture. He did very well here and I do fear now he will be remembered for the actions of this week as opposed to the rest of his tenure, big pity. Disagreements such as the Black/Patey/Canio trillogy are best left between themselves or in the privacy of the board room.
To be very honest I was very surprised when Black started this tweeting stuff, almost like kid at school, it wasn't me miss, it was him, grown men. They should have had it all out face to face, thrown in a few expletives and all moved on.
When will they all understand, the team and the club come first for us.
My hope is we never ever have to go down the route of the last few weeks ever again, the club has been sullied in public, big shame, it doesn't deserve that. I'm glad the players have risen above it all, and, like you all I want now is a nice long period of calm, success and stability. Winning the next two games will rebuild bridges and put things into a calmer mode, more constructive outlook, and you know what they say, time heals. Perhaps a few may even find it within themselves to think again in a more mellow tone of the last few weeks events. they say, time is a healer, I hope so.

After reading Black's twitter rant last night, it seems to me that Black was concerned that Wray was giving Di Canio whatever he wanted because Wray was a West Ham fan. Black got involved and half heartedly committed to a project with an exit strategy that was poorly planned. As a businessman, you always have an exit strategy when in business. Black's timing of the departure upset the apple cart good and proper with this one.
Black took Wray out of the business as he thought Wrays' personal love of football was clouding his judgement in his job. This is when the relationship between PDC and Club broke down quickly.
Patey was brought in on the agenda to sell the club. What was not on Pateys' agenda was to work with Di Canio to move the club forward. PDC became isolated and alone. No information and no support. The sale was pushed through at an extreme rate of knots and missed the deadline, which Black had set. Ritchie was sold to keep the club afloat, whilst the takeover was processed and that took precedent over keeping Di Canio happy. I think what Di Canio off the most was not being kept informed of what was happening. Black presumed PDC was kept informed, which clearly wasn't the case. Was it Patey's role to inform PDC of what was happening??? Because it wouldn't have been Black's role.....
Not sure what to make of this whole thing about PDC and Spencer proposing a contract with a Monday deadline.. The only thing I can put it down to is a massive amount of frustration by the whole thing, which again - I can't blame PDC for.. I would be too if in that situation.
That brings us to the latest goings ons and legal threats. Personally, I don't think Black was in the position to comment on PDC having admitted to only have met him a handful of times and I agreed that the story about 'braking into the club' and comments made by Black were to taint the perception of PDC as a person. I'd be leaving it in the hands of my lawyers too, all things considered.
One man is not bigger than the club but none of the fans would dare argue with the fact that PDC the heartbeat of the club and the fans. Would I welcome him back? Without even thinking about it, of course I would. Chances of him coming back - He's got a job to finish in my opinion!

Simple question, when you handed in your ticket why didn't you give your keys over and clear your desk at the same time. That is what normally happens.
Only thing it seems you and I have in common (apart from age :-( ) is that we will both be cheering on the lads tomorrow!
Let's just face it - you are either for or against Paolo - end of.
Let's get back to football talk - Miller in the dug-out tomorrow?
Was pleased though Black made a statement, he said he would. He and Patey have worded their statements carefully, I doubt there is any real legal grievance with the content.
Time will heal but Paolo really needs to move on and just get over it. I'm sure he will have the last word however...

Di Canio's been spinning in the Adver ever since he took over and it was refreshing to hear Black's side of things last night.
Still looks like Di Canio is attemping to work a constructive dismissal case against the club. If he did and if he won (and I think that's a big if), given some of the salary figures posted on here, I think we'd be waving bye-bye to Swindon Town.
If Di Canio had shut up I don't think he'd have come out of this too badly - he could always say that he didn't like the plans being changed (even if they HAD to be) and leave it at that. But every day it just seems he has to get banging on about poor Paolo and how hard done by he was.
Perhaps it would be better if the Adver just blocked his number on their mobile and got on with reporting about the club again.

I can only remember the shambles when over 20 p1ss artist left before they were faced with actually being asked to get themselves fit or take a drop in salary for failure. If I remember we were left with 4 senior players Caddis, Ferry, Ritchie and Phil Smith. Paolo had to try and get a squad ready for start of the season,
After 5 or 6 games he quickly learned he had problems and turned it round..
Some people have very short memories. I will remember Paolo with 95% affection and some concerns with how he handled certain situations.
He did more good than bad and shame on all you that agree with Black that he wa pleased to see him gone because he stuck up for what he believed in to take this club forward.
As I said lat night, if we don't win promotion you'll all be back on here as you were when Wilson failed with the same old moans that it was Paolo's fault, despite the fact you're glad to see the back of him, he cannot win can he, if we get promotion it is down to the commitment from those who follow him, if we fail it's because he walked out at a crucial time. (which is an arguement we would all agree on, huge misjudgement on his part)

Paolo was great for this club, but this collective washing of dirty laundry in public is tarnishing everything.
Anyone else who has had an Italian girlfriend, or heaven forbid, married her, will know that calm and rational thinking aren't in the DNA. Straight emotion, telling it how it is, and spontaneity, are.
There was once upon a time a way back for Paolo with the new owners, although I'm not sure it would have worked out too well, but every passing hour it disappears into the horizon.
The media must be praying that Paolo pops up agains somewhere, soon. So do I. Good luck Paolo.

I am going to share some with you, Mr B comments are fabricated, but why wouldn't they be, he comes out looking good. He should of pumped money until the end of season, it's a dangerous game doing this and any director being able to do this shows many clubs are at risk. The deal wouldn't of gone through with PDC as manager due to his wages, they are not £850,000 as stated, but his bonus was from Mr B and would of been close to that figure, now you know why not happy! Yes PDC is considering coming back, Mr Spencer has spoken with Jed and the talks are about a new agreement, thus the reason that only temporary deals are offered to goal keeping coach etc.
Therefore, closing time by walking distance = the County Ground., or, Manchester Road!!
You are a STFC wh*r3 - go away, please. We have a very important game tomorrow and the likes of you can, just, F**k O*F

Paolo. Why do you not realise what a fool you're making of yourself? Undoubtedly you have the potential to be a major league manager on the pitch, but off it, your ego (and the yes men surrounding you) have been your downfall.
Pride, dignity, humility, honour ... Paolo you either believe in these things or not. Please, for your own sake, give this some thought,
IMO only this was not returned to Paolo.
Your reference to a 'major league manager' refers to the game in another continent who are still trying to understand Football as opposed to a similar sport known as Soccer.
This might be why you are confused and therefore an excuse for you in your understandable confusion - poor thing
Although I fear you are just another anti PDC contributor.
Paolo a 'fool'?????? -- lol, you are so brave suggesting this and IMO only, entirely wrong.

There's no doubt that whoever takes us up deserves a nice big bonus and when the management team consists of 5 top footballing brains, £1million wouldn't be far from the mark in this day and age.
If Paolo was originally willing to renegotiate that part of his contract with Jed, albeit with a cut off date, then there's probably a chance he still would.
No, he shouldn't have resigned when he did but then again the buyout may not have gone ahead if he hadn't, we just don't know.
I for one would welcome him back and we could put the last few weeks behind us.
Maybe, just maybe, the door hasn't yet slammed shut.
C'mon Paolo, we know you love STFC as much as we do. We can be a team now. Us, you, the players AND the board.
You know it makes sense.

IMO what Guv says makes a lot of sense. It could well be fabricated from reading between the lines but isn't that exactly what everyone else has been doing these last few weeks?

People have different ways of dealing with it.
I don't think he will either but until a new manager is signed I'll remain optimistic.
There's not one other name that's been mentioned that I've been excited about. Unfortunately noone can replace what we had pre-SWP and I'm not sure he would be the same now either. The longer it takes the less chance we have.
If, as reported, the players are having a say in it, I wonder what their views would be on PDC returning.
Would be interesting to know..
I think we'll win well today without him but I can also imagine a scenario where we lose and the man then comes back with everyones full support and we don't lose again this season.
I'd take that ;)

He said he returned to the Club to collect some belongings with a member of the technical staff who were still employed by the club.
However, Fabrizio said after Tuesday's match at Tranmere they were all resigning the following morning.
Therefore, how were any of the technical staff still employed by the Club & entitled to be on site in the early hours of Thursday morning? It doesn't add up.
It was very thoughtful of him to think about the little bit of glue that was pulled off the wall when he removed the picture.
I wished he had been as thoughtful about the wonderful fans that backed him!
Back to the football, lets hope it goes well on the pitch today.

I would ask people to consider that Black was talked into joining the Fitton consortium even though he is not interested in football. Having met Jeremy Wray on a number of occasions I tend to believe him rather than Black when he says Black agreed to the 3 year plan which got Paulo on board.
Black seems a very weak individual not sure of his own mind and when he decided to pull out he tried to protect his reputation by removing Wray and bringing in Patey just to sell the club. Patey can only be described as a duplicitous toad. I met him before he had even met Paulo when he told the Stevenage chairman that De Canio is a fascist and needs to bebought down a peg. To my knowledge, Patey only attended 3 games and when he should have been selling the club in December he swanned off to the Carribean. Worst of all he is a QPR fan! I do not know who failed to tell Paulo that Ritchie was being sold but it has Pateys fingerprints all over it.
The big sadness about the whole episode is that the Football League took so much time to approve the take over. Remember, if the FL approval had happened last Monday, Paulo would still be here and working with the new board who seem like good, down to earth football fans and want the club in the Championship. I hope any legal action Paulo is considering is against Black and Patey and not STFC.

PDC being told Jed not agreeing to bonus, that was a massive problem! That's why he quit, the club wouldn't of been able to pay this, the league wasn't willing to give the green light so black pushed out PDC, once he left. Then knowing there isn't nearly a £1 million debt to worry about in the SUmmer, the club looks financially safe, so FL gave green light, just to ensure no bonus can be claimed, Black gave up all shares! Now you know!

This is just getting boring now.
You comment, not only on STFC, but on other Adver forums and you always seem to take the same stance - reactionary and in a certain political way.
I will not stoop to comment about your surname but if the Adver block Paolo, I do hope they do the same to you.

As for my posts on other Adver forums, I doubt I've posted on more than half a dozen threads outside of the ST ones.
As for my posts being boring - fine. I just find it equally boring to read posts that are little more than "Paolo = god, Black and co = evil, Red Army! Red Army!"

Thanks for the memories PDC, but time to move on.
Andrew Black is right when he says the club is bigger than any one individual.
For my money, I have to say that Black's remarks seem much more even-tempered and reasonable than those of PDC.
