MEN'S HOCKEY: Bennett wins thriller
6:00am Thursday 28th February 2013 in Sport By Ned Payne
SWINDON defeated Lansdown 4-3 as they gave themselves hope of a top-half finish in Premier Division 2A.
Hosts Lansdown opened the scoring from a short corner despite Lindsey Wall clearing off the line.
The equaliser arrived as Fran Bennett latched onto Linda Brouwers’ pass pushed the ball reverse stick between the keeper’s legs.
Brouwers then teed up Bennett again and her shot was going wide, but Chloe Lewis pushed the ball in at the post for her first Swindon goal.
Lansdown tied the scores at half-time but from a short corner at the other end, the ball was slipped to Adriana Boulosa who smashed into the net.
Shortly after Lindsey Wall skipped away from her markers and played in Bennett, who swept over the diving keeper.
A mis-hit strike from a short corner gave Lansdown a third but they could not pull level. Swindon’s player of the match was Fran Bennett.
Swindon 2nds beat Melksham 6-0 in Wessex Division 2. The goals were scored by player of the match Beth George (3), Sue Roberts, Lou Sidhorn and Nicola Wylie.
Elsewhere, North Wilts were trounced 7-0 by Wessex Division 1 leaders Marlborough North Wilts were 4-0 down at the break and conceded three more times after the interval.
North Wilts 2nds drew 0-0 with Wotton-under-Edge in Berkeley Division 3.
Wootton Bassett triumphed 6-1 at BAC in North Division while in the EHB Mixed Trophy, Cirencester were thumped 8-1 by Bristol University.
