SWINDON Town ladies boss Glyn Evans admitted the better team won after Keynsham beat his side 2-0 to win the League Cup.

The Robins started the game slowly and never really got going and were eventually punished by a goal in each half, as they failed to add to the County Cup they secured earlier in the season.

The game proved Evans’ last in charge as he quit on Monday due to concerns over the future of the club, and while he was disappointed to go out on a sour note, he admitted Keynsham were worthy winners.

“It was a game we didn’t deserve to win because we didn’t come out the traps from the start to the finish, and in the end the better team won the trophy,” he said.

“We went behind after 25 minutes and it was a very poor goal to let in, and from that point we didn’t shut the space down and then the second was the same.

“The ball went wide and a cross went in, and their player was able to finish it off at the back post.

“We had a few chances, but the ones we would usually score were hit straight at the keeper, and in the second half we brought on two 16-year-olds who came on and did a really good job.

“Keynsham fully deserved to win the cup, but we were saddened and very disappointed.

“The wind was very strong and the information we gave our players just didn’t seem to get through.”

Elsewhere at the weekend, Swindon Spitfires secured third place in South West Women’s League Eastern Division One with a 2-1 victory over Cirencester Town.

Spitfires dominated long periods of the game, but could not find the cutting edge required to win the game by a bigger margin having already battled back from a goal behind.

Cirencester took the lead against the run of play when Cara Costello gave away procession on the edge of the area, and Kallie Waite pounced on the mistake for fire past Tamsin Kellett.

Spitfires put together some good spells of possession to create chances for Emily Sparkes, Laura Ball and Emma Skinner, but their eventual efforts either went wide or were straight at the grateful Cirencester keeper.

After going in behind at the break Spitfires dominated the second period, and eventually got their reward as Debbie Rose found the net from a Sammie Smith corner.

The lead followed three minutes later, Ball stabbed home an Emma Blackwell cross at the far post to secure all the points.

The Spitfires Under 14s recorded two victories over Bardwell, with Amy Connaghan scoring a hat-trick in the first game as they won 4-0 before a Meghan Larkin brace secured a 2-1 win in the second.

The under 13s saw off Wantage Girls 6-0 thanks to hat-tricks from Katie Donovan and Ellie Scott, while the under 16s completed their season with a 9-1 win over Wootton Bassett Finally, Rebecca Chitolie scored the only goal as the under 11s beat Ashton Keynes 1-0, and the under 12s were 4-2 winners of Frome.
