LAST year’s semi-finalists Stratton Churchway will be hoping for better fortunes after qualifying for the county ladies’ national triples championships final against Amesbury.

Both clubs booked their place at Salisbury on July 20 but also earned the right to represent Wiltshire at Leamington in the National Championships at the beginning of August.

In the quarter-finals played at Wootton Bassett last Saturday, Stratton trio Ellen Bolland, Wendy Anderson and Janet Willis had a five-shot win over Chippenham Town.

Marlene Aylward’s Malmesbury team lost by eight shots to Amesbury, while the Highworth team of Maggie Jordan, Joanna Richman and skip Linda Kingston also lost by eight to Amesbury opposition.

Stratton held on for a 17-14 win over the Marguerite Alexander-skipped Devizes side in the semi-final.

Attention now switches to the county ladies’ national pairs championship, which gets under way in earnest this week.

Ann Roberts-Phare (North Wilts) edged out teenager Lucy Smith (Wootton Bassett) 14-13, despite Smith staging a splendid fightback.
