WOOTTON Bassett boss Jeff Roberts feels his side’s style of football would suit son Jordan but says it is the youngster’s decision as to where his future lies.

Roberts jnr has already signed for Southern League Supermarine this summer but his dad is hoping he will play a role in the Hellenic Premier for Bassett.

The midfielder signed for Supermarine on a dual-registration with Calne last season - where Jeff was manager - but became much more involved with the Southern League club from January onwards, the same month that Jeff quit the hotseat at Bremhill View.

Now that Roberts snr is at Bassett, he is keen to bring his son to the club and the youngster featured in the 2-0 friendly defeat to New College on Friday.

“We’re still trying to talk him in,” said Roberts.

“Dave (Webb, Supermarine manager) knows I’m chasing Jord but it’s down to Jord at the end of the day. It’s about where he’s more comfortable and we try to play football here.

“I’ve watched a few Supermarine games and they seem to play a lot of long-ball, they don’t really play from the back and we do here.

“That suits Jord but it’s down to him. I haven’t really pressurised him. I said to him, have a game (against New College) and see what you think.”

Regardless of whether or not Roberts jnr comes to Bassett, the 2012/13 Division One West runners-up have a new look about them for the forthcoming Hellenic Premier campaign.

A clutch of players have arrived from Calne to supplement experienced heads such as Steve Yeardley and Shaun Terry, and boss Roberts knows it will take time for his side to reach its potential.

“It’s about having a few games to try to get all the lads to blend together and be part of a squad,” he said.

“We know the first month is going to be hard.

“We need a few games behind us to get the lads to know each other, but we’ll have a look at it after that to see if we need to strengthen areas.

“At the moment we think that we’ve got a good enough squad and a good bunch of lads.”

Roberts has been active in the transfer market in recent days and he has secured the signature of Ryan Stanners, who was also being chased by Supermarine.

It is believed that South Marston boss Webb was keen for the youngster to be dual-signed - as he was last season with New College - but the midfielder and striker has pledged his 2013/14 future purely to Bassett.

New College got their pre-season off to a winning start with a 2-0 victory over Wootton Bassett on Friday.

Goals from Christy Millar and Calum Courtney saw the students take victory at Rylands Way.

Meanwhile, Bassett have suffered a blow after Jonny Aitkenhead sustained a fractured metatarsal.
