ATHLETICS: Swindon's Crisp is finally beaten

Swindon Advertiser: Swindon's Will Crisp Swindon's Will Crisp

WILL Crisp’s amazing unbeaten run in the Oxford Cross Country League was brought to an end on Sunday.

It is over two years since the 14-year-old last tasted defeat in the league as he has been dominant in first the under 13 boys’ age group and more recently the under 15s.

A good start to the 2013/14 winter season suggested that his two-year reign would be extended in the second league fixture at Culham Park having already won the opening fixture last month.

Initially Crisp thought his record was intact after finishing 12th overall in the combined under 17 men/under 15 boys’ race but official results, which were only ratified the following day, confirmed he was second under 15s boy, beaten by Dominic Dyer of St Edward’s School who claimed his first-ever league win.

That official result will come as a disappointment to Crisp, who is coached by Bryan Clinton, having enjoyed a run of 14 successive victories since last experiencing defeat at Ascott-Under-Wychwood on November 2011.

But hopefully that will be a temporary blip in what promises to be an exciting season for the Faringdon Community College student, who lives near Wanborough.

“I have the Wiltshire Championships coming up this Sunday at Bath University and hopefully I can have a good performance there,” said Crisp.

“And I am really looking forward to the English Schools’ Championships as I am top of the junior boys’ age group now.”

Also in action on Sunday was Swindon Harrier clubmate Ciaran Cooper, who finished third in the under 17 men’s race in the opening league match the previous month. Sam Davies was 17th.

Miranda King placed eighth in the under 17 women’s event with Charlotte George 16th.

In other Harriers news, Alex Bampton was second at the Cannon Hill Parkrun in Birmingham while closer to home, Isaac McAdam was the junior men’s winner at the Swindon Parkrun in 20:17.

Will Ballard (21:24) was the second junior home while his dad Nick was just behind as he won the men’s over 55 category (21:25). Jenny Garth triumphed in the women’s over 55 age group (24:07).
