Carlin fires warning shot to Team USA
SWINDON flyer Jazz Carlin has warned Team USA that the European Allstars mean business when the teams go head-to-head at Duel in the Pool over the next two days.
On ‘home’ ground at Tollcross International Swimming Centre in Glasgow, Europe will be hoping to avenge a heavy defeat in Atlanta two years ago when they were steamrollered 181.5-80.5.
And triple British champion Carlin, who will go in the 400m and 800m freestyle, feels her continent is in much better shape to challenge their cousins from across the pond this time out.
“I think all of us just want to beat America really,” said Carlin, who is joined in the European team by Swindon-born Hannah Miley.
“America have won the last two Duel in the Pools, but this year the European team is the strongest it’s ever been.
“I think it’s going to be one of the tightest competitions there’s been. I really couldn’t call it, it’s just going to be who’s the best on the day.
“There’s going to be a lot of people coming that want to see the stars from America and Europe and I think it’s going to be a really good one to watch.
“It’s going to be a great experience to get the first touches in the Commonwealth pool.”
December is an unusual period of time for Carlin in that she arrived in Scotland a matter of days after competing in three events at the European Short Course Championships in Herning, Denmark.
However, the ex-Swindon Tigershark feels that physical tiredness will not be too much of a problem and is consoling herself with the thought that others are in the same boat.
“It’s going to be something that I’ve not really been used to, having back-to-back competitions, especially short course,” she said.
“But short course allows you to do that because it doesn’t take so much out of you as long course.
“I think a lot of the swimmers are going from the Europeans to Duel in the Pool as well.
“It will be interesting and I’m really excited.”
