Marine Ladies start 2014 at a canter
5:30am Tuesday 14th January 2014 in Sport
SUPERMARINE got off to a flyer in 2014 as they overcame the challenge of visitors Wasps 2nds 15-5 on Sunday.
Supermarine were first on the scoreboard when they earned a penalty and Natalie Williams slotted between the uprights.
Not long after, the hosts had their first try. A big push from a scrum gave them the momentum to drive over the whitewash with flanker Claire Chard touching the ball down. Williams added the extras.
Ten points up, Supermarine maintained the pressure and good play from the forwards through several phases afforded scrum-half Leanne Sear the chance to go over, which she duly took.
The teams turned round with the score at 15-0 and the general pattern of play continued in the second period, with Wasps pinned back in their own half.
However, the home side suffered a blow when a clash of heads between two Supermarine players took them down to 14 players as they had no further replacements to bring on.
Wasps knew this was their opportunity and they duly took it, throwing the ball wide before a final push and dive over the line gave them the try they wanted.
However, Supermarine held on easily for the win.
Forward of the match was awarded jointly to prop Aileen Douglas and Chard, while back of the match went to Sear.
Supermarine will hope to pick up where they left off next weekend when they welcome Guildford to South Marston.
