HOCKEY: Swindon's relegation troubles go on
5:30am Thursday 20th February 2014 in Sport
SWINDON’S problems at the foot of the Davis Wood Hockey League Championship continue following a 4-2 home defeat to Robinsons A.
The hosts went into the game at Isambard School looking to build on a terrific performance a week previously at Cheltenham but they were brought back down to earth with a bump by the division’s third top side.
Swindon looked bright and confident in the early stages and took the lead after only 26 seconds. Chris Parsons dispossessed the Robinsons sweeper, found striker Tom Gillingham with a quick pass and the young striker slipped the ball coolly under the advancing keeper to put Swindon ahead.
Swindon continued to create openings for much of the first half but they were unable to extend their lead and soon they were made to pay.
Two quick breaks by the visitors cost the home side dear and by half-time Swindon were trailing 2-1 after conceding twice in the final two minutes of the first half.
The home side retaliated after the break and found themselves level after Lewis Dyers’ cross was deflected into the back of the Robinsons net by Henry Cheney but lightning struck twice, as Robinsons scored twice in quick succession to take charge of the game once again.
This Saturday Swindon travel to ECV Hornets (Exeter) looking for vital points to try and avoid relegation.
They currently sit second bottom of the Championship, seven points behind the Hornets who are one place above them in 10th.
