KELVIN Young is unlikely to face super-middleweight hot prospect Callum Smith for the English title despite the British Boxing Board of Control putting the contest out for purse bids.

The IBO Intercontinental champion is in action on March 14 against Tomas Kugler from the Czech Republic in an eight-round non-title contest at the Oasis.

And while the BBBoC have set a deadline on March 12 for bids with the bout with Smith to be held by the end of May, Young’s manager and promoter Keith Mayo insists the contest won’t be happening.

Liverpudlian Smith is a renowned savage puncher having ended six of his nine fights in the first round, including stopping the normally durable Patrick Mendy for the English title inside the opening three minutes.

The Eddie Hearn-promoted star is also the current WBC International champion having stopped Argentine Ruben Eduardo Acosta within five rounds.

Smith, who is the youngest of four boxing champion brothers - the eldest being British super-middleweight holder Paul, is next in action on March 15 at Echo Arena in Liverpool.

The clash for either man is unlikely to do much for their careers with Young likely to defence his IBO belt following his fight in two weeks, while Smith is marching up the rankings and being touted as a potential world champion.

The youngest rose to fame in the boxing world with six consecutive first round stoppages and is being steered towards the British title next once his older brother has won the Lonsdale belt outright and vacates.

Mayo said: “I have spoken to (Hearn’s) Matchroom and the fight won’t be happening.

“I think they are looking to move Callum on and we are keeping an eye on the situation should the belt become vacant.”

With Young’s next contest two weeks away, Mayo says that the Penhill fighter is working hard in preparation for his Kugler bout.

“Training is going well, Kugler is a tough opponent for Kelvin so that is our focus right now,” Mayo added.

“We are keeping an eye on what the situation is with regards the English and British titles.”

Tickets for the KM Promotions show at the Oasis, which will feature fellow Swindonians Ryan Martin, Joe Beeden, Ben Fitch and Lawrence Bennett, are priced at £30 for unreserved seats and £60 for VIP ringside seats.
