LOUIS Thompson admitted Swindon Town were made to pay for their own profligacy in front of goal at Crewe Alexandra but the young midfielder was keen to avoid dwelling on the negative aspects of a largely encouraging performance at Gresty Road.

Vadaine Oliver’s 25-yard volley cancelled out Ryan Harley’s first goal in Town colours, as the Robins’ winless streak was extended to five matches in Cheshire, while Michael Smith and Thompson’s older brother Nathan both wasted good opportunities for Swindon.

Thompson junior accepted that Town needed to be more clinical when he spoke to the media post-match, saying: “I think we were kind of unlucky but at the end of the day goals win games and we didn’t score enough of them today.

“We’ve worked on keeping the ball and I thought we did that very well today. We had lots of opportunities and in the coming games we need to take them.

“I think we started sharply, I don’t think they really wanted it and you’ve got to take advantage of that and score a couple of goals so when they started pressing at the end of the game we could have a bit of a buffer, but we didn’t do that.

“There’s plenty of positives to take out of today, though, and we don’t need to dwell on the negatives. We move on to MK Dons on Saturday.

“Once you’re 1-0 up you’re always suspect to the underdogs coming and scoring. We created lots of chances and, if we score them, it turns into how we played against them at home when it was 5-0 but it’s a different day and a different score.

“It could be down to experience, it could just be down to individuals. Sometimes you make that wrong decision at the wrong time. I don’t think there was an individual mistake that led to anything today but we could have taken the pressure off ourselves.”
