Swindon Supermarine have the Dorset & Wilts 1 North title in their sights after a resounding 54-8 victory over Chippenham seconds on Saturday.

Marine are now five points behind league leaders Minety, but crucially have played two games less than the leaders. Simply put if the South Marston club win their remaining games they will win the title.

Marine dominated Chippenham from the start. The home side got on the board within five minutes and racked their first three scores from opposition ball on the way to a nine-try bonus point win.

First team coach Sean Millwaters was delighted with his side and said that they are now in the best position possible to take the league crown.

“It’s our best performance, definitely. When we played them (Chippenham) at their place we came away with a 14-8 win. Them coming to our pace we expected the same sort of tough game.

“We adopted a new style all the way back in pre-season and it’s clicked in games for 15, 20 minute spells. On Saturday we clicked for 70 minutes, with the utmost of respect to Chippenham they couldn’t live with us.

“Their coach said afterwards ‘What happened out there?’ We just clicked.”

“We’ve got the best defence and the best point difference. Now we’re in the perfect position to go on and win the league.”

Marine had been expecting a tough game against Chippenham seconds, who have been perenial challengers for the division over the last few seasons. Millwaters team are the form side in the league though, having not lost since December and ultimately had too much forward power and back ability for Chippenham.

Marine’s backs shared seven of their nine tries between them. Matt Dickens led the scoring with a hat-trick, notching his 17th, 18th and 19th tries of the season in the process. Alex Robinson got two, Steve Caldwell one, Killian Spain one, Chris Dawes one and Millwaters adding some personal glory for himself with one.

Though it was the backs who made the biggest impression on the points total Millwaters said it would be unfair to overlook the work the forwards did in creating a platform for those scores.

“Though the backs scored the tries, the only reason they got the opportunity was because of our fowards dominating theirs.”
