SWINDON TOWN 1 WOLVES 4: Full-time report

SWINDON Town never recovered from conceding three first-half Wolves goals last night before eventually falling to a 4-1 defeat to the league leaders.

Bakary Sako scored twice and Nouha Dicko once as Town’s flat-footed defence was split open time and again during a shambolic first period and, although the hosts’ much-improved display in the second period brought a goal for Michael Smith, it wasn’t enough to trouble the league leaders before Leon Clarke pounced to add a fourth in stoppage time.

Both sides kept the ball well in the opening minutes without either keeper being troubled, but that all changed after only nine minutes when Sako ghosted between a host of Town defenders to head home James Henry’s cross and give his side the lead.

The Town defence was split open again just 10 minutes later when Sako’s ball allowed Dicko to thump past Tyrell Belford and, although Town did create a couple of chances, Sako’s second ended the contest before half-time.

Town came out for the second half with renewed belief as they kept the ball well and looked to probe Wolves at every opportunity, and after a flurry of efforts off target the Robins soon had one back as Smith brought the ball down, turned Richard Stearman and swept the ball home.

The goal, along with Town’s improvement after the break and another County Ground return from Leon Clarke, brought the home crowd into the game but it wasn’t enough as Clarke fired home his side’s fourth in added time.

Will get thumped by Bristol City next, and they will also finish the season above Town.

Embarrassing management from the top to the coach.

Sounded awful.
Cooper same excuse? we are young and have to learn our trade? same for next season?
What an absolute shambles.
The things we have learned tonight
1 Manager and most of the players have already given up
2 Absolutely no motivation
3 Yes we have a young squad but without motivation a young squad will not succeed.
Mr Cooper please do not feed us excuses, injuries the ref a young squad or whatever else you want to blame,
The team for whatever reason are not fit enough and not hungry enough for success whether that is down to you or lee power not wanting championship football the attitude has changed from the first half of the season to the second just as it did at the end of last season where it also looked like the players lost their hunger for promotion.
Does Lee Power want promotion i think this is a serious question that needs to be answered because their answers from the weekend suggest that they were planning for league one football from half way or even before that in the season
Cooper in his interview "every team knows we are not blessed with pace at the back and they wait for us to make a mistake and then stick it in behind them" Is he for real? why has he not changed it then? just shows how clueless he is. Knows he has a weakness but wont fix it or change it now that is poor management why not put ward on the nech and give 2 defenders with pace a chance?

Sounded awful, why criticise when not there. Yes, we got caught out by a very good side who play very similar to us, but who play with pace from front to back. Get real, they have had parachute payments and have the luxury of having still in their team players from their previous campaigns, = seasoned players.

There was always a strong chance that was going to happen tonight against a good Wolves team, but to say we were poor is an understatement. Cannot believe some of the basic defending that we did not do to prevent especially the first goal. Switched off for the short quickly taken free kick then no marking whatsoever at the far post! Carved open straight through the middle for the next too simply isn't good enough regardless of whether Ward is slow or whatever but he has played every game almost and it's happened countless times with no change from cooper. Despite being 3-0 at half time the biggest surprise for me was to see n'guessan brought off for Barker? Surely you have to go with two up front in smith and N'guessan? This sort of change has happened from Cooper throughout the season and makes me think he is not up to the job. Thank good we've got the points in the bag

Oddly despite the defeat came away feeling better about the performance tonight than on Saturday. It was a decent game of football despite the loss.

In the first half the back 4 were so exposed by swift quick counter attacks with no cover in front of them... Kassim has gone from master to misfit in less than a season with the lack of cover he gave in midfield plus often getting brushed off of the ball..

Wolves seemed in the first half to get every break of the ball going alongside our own teams ability to encourage opposition attacks through break downs in our own play/ mistakes.... confidence or lack of, springs to mind during that first half.

Second half gave the fans some encouragement and whether it was Wolves taking their foot off the accelerator or Coopers tactical switch Town dominated the ball creating a few worthwhile chances with Smith finishing his well. Again the run of the ball was against us ith Jay's header hitting both bar and post and a 3-2 it would certainly have been game on for the last 15 minutes.

Needless to say a messy ending gave Wolves their unjust fourth on what was their only creative attack in that half. Their fans were so quiet in the second half and town fans got right behind the team was evidence of how that second half was played out given it was 3-0 at the break.

No doubt the Wolves deserved a win, but 4-1 was extremely unjust on the Town... some may say a back 4 conceding 4 don't deserve credit, but Jay and Branco particularly, was very impressive winning every header and decent control of the football.... there is a Division 1 footballer in him, even if needing a bit more experience at times, a thing he will only get with games.

It's a good job that we always beat the teams with less money than us then isn't it.

after the flight expenses plus hotel plus tickets for last 2 home games so glad at least I got early flight home. After illness from last 2 seasons wow did I pick some games.
Comment only that Cooper aint no leader/motivator/man
ager.
Post ref Bristol City they will finish above us,Cottrill was the Manager we should have got.Cooper cannot be allowed to Pass the buck, yes there a young team but do not appear to be interested, let´s hope they can pick a few points up and avoid being dragged down.
Oh was good to see some old pals, still moaning on well that´s us STFC Fans.
Where would Mr Power be without the real hard core lads who attend week in week out

That's my point, he isn't a winger and would have been better with Smith up front
