Sell on his way back after first victory

Swindon Advertiser: Martin Sell Martin Sell

MARTIN Sell feels his first Jamega Tour win of the year at Mentmore earlier this week is his first step back towards the Challenge Tour.

Sell carded two successive six-under rounds to finish 12 under for the tournament and pick up the winner’s cheque.

In the first round Sell, who had battled strong winds all afternoon at the Buckinghamshire course, hit birdies at one, four, 12 and the last three holes to finish strongly and was tied for the lead with Will Bailey overnight.

The Wrag Barn pro picked up where he left off in the second round, with birdies at the first two holes, as well as eight and nine to turn 10 under. Two further birdies on the back nine put him ahead of the pack and were enough to give him the win.

Sell was pleased with his win but sees it as part of the bigger picture of getting back on to the Challenge Tour after a disappointing 2013.

Sell said: “It was my third tournament of the year, the two previous tournaments were good, I finished second and 10th and I was playing some nice stuff.

“It’s a course I’ve won on before so I felt confident.

“I opened with a round of 66, and followed that up with another to pull ahead. I wasn’t really worried about anyone else’s golf. I had a figure in mind of between 10 and 12 and concentrated on trying to get the four or five birdies to get there.

“I was a bit disappointed last year when I came off the main tour. It’s been good spending a lot of time with my coach, I made a plan golf swing-wise where I want to go and it’s starting to come off.

“At this time, it’s one win and it feels great, but it’s part of a bigger picture. I set myself a little goal of trying to get to five (tournament wins), so it’s one down four to go.

“My goal is to get back to that tour, I made a few changes this winter and mentally I’m now in a better place.”

Sell moves on to the next tour event at The Warwickshire Golf Club starting on Monday morning.
