FLYBALL: Difficult weekend for Cotswold club in Didcot tournament
5:30am Wednesday 14th May 2014 in Sport
FOLLOWING two very sucessful tournaments for the club, The Cotswolds sent six teams to the most recent competition at Acremead near Didcot over the weekend.
The event turned out to be a difficult one, as The Cotswolds struggled to cope in difficult condiitons with high winds and rain disrupting the matches.
The best racing for the club was in Division Four, with sister teams the Typhoons and Siroccos facing each other in a tough league. The Typhoons, with Cerys, Reuben, Rona and Dylan, showing great consistency picked up second place overall, mainly due to a win over their sister team in a tight battle.
The club’s Novice team, the Gales, also did well with a reduced line-up following promotion of Lexi and Jasper to the Open teams and a late withdrawal leaving just three dogs and the very inexperienced Bailey stepping in to fill the gap.
Bailey was the toast of the team as they reached their last match unbeaten but the inexperience finally counted and a first defeat in three tournaments followed. The team earned second place.
The Zephyrs moved up in to Division Three following recent good results but struggled to match their higher-ranked opposition. However, they rallied to pull off two very creditable wins to take fourth, two spots higher than their seeding predicted despite the withdrawal of speedster Boo due to injury.
Division Six saw the Sundowners, made up of a mix of veterans Jack, Kelli, Moss and Lexie and the youth of Mia and Hekla, fight hard against younger oppostion, picking up two wins for fourth place.
The top team, the Cyclones, had a difficult day in Division Two, with an altered line-up slipping to five defeats and bottom place on the day.
The one bright spot was that Rocky, Flynn, Woody and Tammi combined to produce the team’s fastest run of the season so far, guaranteeing that they will retain their seeding position.
The club heads to Basingstoke on May 17 and 18.
