SWINDON TOWN: Luongo brands Aussie training "most intense" of his career

Swindon Advertiser: Massimo Luongo is training with Australia in Sydney ahead of the World Cup Massimo Luongo is training with Australia in Sydney ahead of the World Cup

MASSIMO Luongo has branded the Australian pre-World Cup training camp as the "most intense" football experience of his career.

Swindon Town's midfielder is currently part of the Aussie's preliminary 30-man squad in Sydney and is hopeful of getting a chance to prove his worth in Monday's friendly against South Africa, after which coach Ange Postecoglou will narrow down the numbers to the 23 allowed by FIFA.

In the meantime, however, he's getting used to some pretty rigorous training drills.

“It’s been really intense. Probably the most intense I’ve experienced (in my career),” Luongo told www.socceroos.com.au.

“It’s like half pre-season and half getting ready for the World Cup with tactical too.

“It’s got everything jammed into one session.

“Terrigal was quite tough training and we’ll start again training tomorrow which will be quite tough too.”

“Physically I’m in good condition but this is another step here in the Australian squad, but I’ve adapted pretty well.

“It’s been good, I’ve enjoyed it. I’ve met a lot of them for the first time but we’ve bonded well.

“It’s been brilliant, definitely.”

Luongo has yet to be given any kind of indication by Postecoglou about his potential inclusion in the final squad for the tournament in Brazile.

“No, he kind of keeps those things to himself. I know myself if I’m doing well or not. I know what I’ve got to do. Just be myself," he said.

“I’d love to be involved (on Monday against South Africa).”

As far as I go says...

Call of the search party Massimo Luongo has been found safe and well in Oz after a 6 month long search.

I thought that lad was MIA after a cracking first few months of the season. Good to see he's ok.

I thought the lad was supposed to be shagged out after such a hard season at the CG. I suppose he'll be rested at the start of the new campaign then!

Bottom line is forget all this vitriol on this thread, if Mass gets to the World Cup, whether he plays or not, it will be good for the Town.

Good luck to the lad. He's a class player who could kick on from this opportunity. He will either come back and play well for us or be sold on for a princely sum. I'd much sooner the former but ffs give the lad a chance and be proud we've got an international in the squad.

Manc, your optimism is admirable but I don't think Luongo's done anything to suggest he's worth more than the £400k we're said to have paid for him. To be honest I thought he had a disappointing season, given the huge promise he showed in his few games at the end of 12/13. There's no certainty he'll do well for us if he isn't sold. Best of luck to him though. I hope he does make it to the World Cup and plays well. That could be the making of him.
