SAM Lawro might have racked up another ton as Wootton Bassett beat Hinton Charterhouse by 106 runs to stay top of Wiltshire League Division One, but it was Harvey Cummins’ flashbang cameo at the top of the order that was singled out by captain Darren Beasant post-match.

Cummins, who had been struggling for runs prior to the knock, spanked a quickfire 59 to get Bassett into the groove early at Rylands Way, before Lawro - dropped at slip without scoring third ball - anchored the innings as the hosts reached 239-8 from their 45 overs.

Reaching his hundred off the final ball before tea, Lawro ended 101 not out, but skipper Beasant said: “We were stuck in on one that was a little damp down one end. Sam managed to get to his 100 off the last ball of the innings. He batted one end and people batted around him. Harv had been struggling most of the year, managed to get 20 or 30 at Malmesbury, seems to have a smile back on his face and did what he does best.

“He went out and bombarded a few of the houses on Rylands Way. If you bowl him a half-volley he blocks it but if you bowl him a length ball he whacks it 80 yards back over your head. He went out and got us 50 or 60 in the way only Harvey can and got us off to a flyer and we went quite hard from there.”

Tidy bowling from Lee Stevens and Ian Lancaster, who shared seven Charterhouse wickets for 61, helped reduce the visitors to 133 all out.

Beasant said: “They had a good start to the season. They led the league for the first three weeks. We’ve played Malmesbury and Hinton in the space of two weeks, both of whom started the season well and were up the top and unbeaten, and we’ve managed to beat both relatively convincingly.

“I couldn’t be more pleased with the last couple of weeks - with the nature of the victories as much as the victories themselves.”
