THE Swindon Town squad are set to be given a thorough examination this week as they spend the next few days being put through their paces by the Navy.

Manager Mark Cooper has taken the squad to a base on Thorney Island, near Portsmouth, where, from today, they will be put through a series of fitness tasks and teambuilding exercises.

The training camp will also involve pre-season matches with Petersfield (Tuesday) and Eastleigh (Thursday) with Cooper looking forward to seeing how his players cope.

“We’re going to play two games while we’re there, we’ll train very hard and let the PTIs get their fingers into the players and I’m thoroughly looking forward to watching it,” he said.

“As a player, when I was at Bristol City, we used to go to Hullavington and I can remember it being a real laugh but hard. It was teambuilding and things like that.

“I’m certainly looking forward to it. It will be good to get the players away for a few days, play a couple of days and do some work with them.

“We’ve still got fitness work to do. From the start of pre-season we have six weeks to get it all into the players.”

I hope this silences a few that mark doesn't get them fit enough, he obviously got that sorted as this year he will have a full pre season to prepare fitness wise. If you remember last year he was doing everything on his own.

Isn't this old skool way if doing things a thing of the past?
Boot camps are not popular with top clubs anymore.

Whatever they do they are wrong with some people of here. Certain fans were moaning last season they werent fit enough and anyhow how do people on here know what sort of training they are doing - answer they dont they automatically think because they have gone to the navy for training its back to the old days of loads of running.
Why dont some of you just give it a rest and stop constantly criticising.
If you remember at the start of last season some players didnt have any pre season as we signed so many just before the season started and they needed a few weeks to get up to the mark so at least give the manager and squad a chance.
Will be a good test on Thursday against Eastleigh who have just got to the conference and signed a few pros most notably Constable from Oxford plus a few others and by no means will it be an easy game.

Le God - you're right to remark about comments re fitness before the season has started but and despite any valid excuses there were times last season when we appeared lacking in fitness.
So fair play to Cooperman by him recognising that and attempting to get the lads fit at the start by adopting Lou's squaddie training technique.
The proof of the pudding of course will be to see how the team performs in the first few competitive games.

Hopefully we will see a few of you at Petersfield on Tuesday night. Relatively easy run to get here - M4 to Newbury, A34 to Winchester and A272 to Petersfield, only takes around an hour or so. Good chance to see your side and how they are shaping up at close quarters

Agree, very encouraging, now lets see if it works during the season,it was a bi concern in quite a few games last season where we seemed to be tiring in the last quarter.
