Town announce Rodgers deal
Updated 3:07pm Thursday 17th July 2014 in Sport
SWINDON Town have announced the signing of midfielder Anton Rodgers on a one-year contract, subject to Football League and FA approval.
Rodgers, son of Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, has linked up with the Swindon squad at their army training camp this week and was involved in Town's win over Petersfield on Tuesday night.
The Advertiser reported that Rodgers was due to be unveiled as a full-time fixture following Tuesday's game, although the club insisted at the time he was only on trial.
Speaking to the club's official website, Rodgers said: “I know a few of the boys here and Luke (Williams) asked if I was interested and I was really keen,” he said. “I’m from down the road in Reading so it was something I was interested in doing and I’m glad it’s done now.
“I started my professional career at Brighton, before moving to Oldham. I was up close up with my family there with my dad at Liverpool. I just wanted to move closer back to home. Thankfully, Swindon were interested and it was something I could do.
He continued: “I like to get on the ball, set the play up and play through the lines of midfield, nick a goal if I can. I just want to play as much as I can.“ Finally, Rodgers revealed that he was glad to be around a number of familiar faces at SN1.
He said: “I know George Barker, Yaser (Kasim), Rapha (Branco) and Ben Gladwin; he’s a Reading boy as well and he’s one of my good friends. It make it that bit easier but still doesn’t stop the nerves when you come in on the first day.”
