WESTLECOT indoor teams enjoyed a winning start this week in their opening-round matches in national inter-club team competitions.

The Old Town club’s mixed side went down narrowly 77-73 to Carterton last season in round two in the Egham Trophy – but extracted ample revenge last Sunday in the opening round of the 2014/15 competition, winning by five shots (93-88).

The men’s Over 60s Double Rinks side just held to beat Malvern Hills 34-32 on Tuesday .

In the Egham match, rink honours were shared at 2-2, with the away rinks turning up trumps for their respective sides. Chris Cheesley and Tom Walkley’s fours recorded match-winning seven and five-shot successes for Westlecot at Carterton.

At home, Dave Snell’s quartet lost out by five shots, while Kyle Anderson’s foursome were edged out 20-18.

Westlecot denied Carterton as they won all four ends on the run-in on both the 20th and 21st ends to grab a last-gasp victory, six shots coming collectively on both of the last two ends.

Westlecot meet Gloucester in round two of the Egham on November 9.

The men’s senior side just held on to win against Malvern Hills and will face either Fairford or MidGlos A, who have still to play their second round tie, in round three by November 28.
