DESPITE being a seasoned professional, Darren Ward still wants to play as many games as possible, having got his move away from the County Ground.

The veteran defender has joined Crawley on loan until the end of the season, taking him up to the end of his contract with Swindon Town.

Ward has not played for the Robins since the 4-1 defeat at home to Wolves last March.

At the start of this season Town boss Mark Cooper stated that both the defender and the Ryan Harley, currently on loan at Exeter, were not in consideration for his matchday squads.

Chairman Lee Power hailed the 36-year-old’s professionalism in his Q&A with BBC Radio Wiltshire on Wednesday evening and the player himself says he is confident that will serve him well as returns to first team football after nine months.

“I’m really excited about the challenge and getting back on the pitch,” said Ward.

“I was captain last season and played nearly every game so it’s funny I’ve not played at all this season. I can’t go into detail too much about why but I have stayed fit and want to bring that to Crawley.

“I take pride in my fitness and how I live. I want to get as many games in my career as possible.

“I have had a few arranged games and keep a track on red zone minutes and work hard.

“It might take a couple of games to get into the full swing of things but nothing to worry about as far as I’m concerned.”

His new boss Dean Saunders said he was pleased to have somebody of Ward’s experience to share with the team’s younger members and the defender hopes to lead by example.

“I’ve studied fitness and nutrition over the years and just try to be a model pro and help young players out,” he added.

“I have played a lot of games and was captain last season and I like helping players out. I’m quite vocal on the pitch so hopefully I can bring a lot to the table and contribute in a big way.”
