WALCOT ABC’s chief coach Harry Scott has had a remarkable year with the County Road-based club.

Despite suffering from cancer, Scott, who was nominated for this award last year, was back in the gym training his fighters within in a matter of weeks of having surgery on his throat.

Scott helped Young Sportsman of the Year nominee Patrick McDonagh reach the Great Britain team and participate in the World and European Youth Championships.

Walcot chairman Dave Veysey said: “Last season was my 20th as club chairman and it was a tough one for the club with our chief coach Harry Scott having undergone throat surgery for cancer.

“But Harry being Harry, he was bravely back in the gym a few weeks later as if nothing had happened – he’s an absolute rock and inspiration to us all.”

Tony Watchman joined an elite band of Wiltshire bowlers this year when he became only the third true Moonraker – and the first in more than 30 years – to be president of both the indoor and outdoor county sides.

Watchman took over as the president of the Wiltshire Indoor Bowls Association in the autumn.

Despite being involved in a serious car accident in 1983, Watchman has always stayed in the sport.

He said: “Since my car accident, I try not to take anything for granted. I would like to thank all those most sincerely who have helped me achieve all the things that I have done regarding the wonderful game of bowls.”

From the world of equestrian sport, Claire Chambers is next to be nominated for the award.

Chambers has been involved with horses from a young age and has represented her country on many occasions, including being on the Guernsey HOYS England team and placing at major UK shows.

As well as buying and selling young sports horses, she has helped provide tuition to youngsters of all disciplines.

Ian Sharpe is our next nominee for the Grassroots Unsung Hero Award.

The current chairman at White Horse Cricket Club, Sharpe has been at the club since their inception in the early 1980s and remains as the club captain.

Sharpe has been a key figure at the club for more than 30 years, where he has helped to look after the ground, contributed to fundraising efforts and helped orgainse the team.
