SKIPPER Nathan Thompson is expected to make his comeback from injury when Swindon Town travel to Coventry City on Monday night.

The centre-half has missed Town’s last two matches after picking up a thigh problem in the Boxing Day win at Walsall.

However, Town manager Mark Cooper yesterday told the local media that Thompson is likely to be fit to return to action at the Ricoh Arena.

“He’s training now so we don’t foresee any problems,” said Cooper.

“He’s been back training with the physio, he had a clearing session on Wednesday and Thursday and he’s going to train properly today [Friday].”

Cooper has no fresh injury concerns to worry about ahead of the game following last Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Fleetwood Town.

The Town boss also revealed that chairman Lee Power had opened discussions with Andy Williams over extending the striker’s contract, which expires at the end of the season.

Williams has been Town’s form player in recent weeks and is the club’s top scorer with 16 goals in all competitions, including a run of seven goals in the last seven games.

Cooper said: “I know the chairman has spoken to him but, if you put yourself in Andy Williams’ position, he knows that if he keeps scoring goals and he’s out of contract and over 24, he’s in an extremely strong position.

“He’s brilliant. He’s great in the changing room. He’s not a ranter and raver, he leads by example, his workrate is sensational and he’s come back with a vengeance after his spell at Yeovil and his injury. He’s come back really fit and he’s got a real sense of belief about him.”

Meanwhile, chairman Power has revealed Town will still pay a percentage of Darren Ward’s wages after the defender agreed a deal to join Crawley Town on loan for the rest of the season earlier this week.

The 36-year-old has not featured for Cooper’s side in 2014-15 and will see the out the remainder of his Swindon contract at the Broadfield Stadium.

Power told Link Sport: “We’ve had to heavily discount his wages to allow him to go there. I was willing to do that and happy to do that because of the person and the man that’s going.

“Wardy’s family moved back at the start of the season because we sat down and had the chat, and I’m sure he wanted to get back close to his family and this move sorted it. There was no way I was going to hinder that.

“I came to an agreement very quickly with Crawley and he goes with nothing but our best wishes.”
