SWINDON Town’s Massimo Luongo admits he has been surprised by his red-hot form in the Asian Cup as he prepares for the tournament’s final.

The midfielder has taken centre stage at the tournament in Australia with two man of the match performances for the host nation and is looking to top it off with a trophy at the end of it.

Luongo continued his string of fine displays as Australia made comfortable progress into the final with a 2-0 win over UAE this morning.

Trent Sainsbury put Australia in front inside three minutes, heading home Luongo’s corner, while the Town playmaker then created the opening for Jason Davidson to double the lead after 15 minutes.

The 22-year-old has been in impressive form Down Under, which has caught the attention of many watching the continental tournament.

“It wasn’t our best performance but we know we deserved to win the game and now we are in the final,” said Luongo after the match.

“We want to control games, play possession-based football and tire the opposition.

“By scoring two early goals it could be that we dropped off with our tempo and perhaps if we hadn’t scored so early we may have controlled the game better for longer.

“I am a little bit surprised by my performances so far, but I know myself what I am capable of.

“To be fair I’ve only been tested at League One level so it is nice to be able to do it on such a big stage. Hopefully next game I can continue on.”

Luongo and his teammates will be looking for revenge when his Australia side face South Korea in the tournament finale on Sunday.

The Taegeuk Warriors, are the only side to inflict a defeat on the host nation, beating them by a single goal in the final Group A clash to clinch top spot.

However, Luongo believes that his side have grown during the tournament and will learn from their mistakes in the first game as they look to complete a goal they set for themselves more than six months ago.

“We came together six months ago or longer with a main focus to win the Asian Cup,” he added.

“The most important thing is the game and we know that if we play well the result will follow, with a win.

“Compared to the last game against South Korea we created a number of chances. Obviously they have a lot of threats which we have experienced first-hand but we will learn from our mistakes and look to speed up our tempo and be more disciplined.”
