SWINDON Town manager Luke Williams believes there will be transfer activity of some kind at the County Ground before the window closes on Monday evening.

To date, Michael Doughty, a one-month loan from Queens Park Rangers, has been the only bit of business coming in, with six players heading for the exit door, five loan returns and one permanent.

When asked if the suggested movement would be in or out, Williams replied ‘either’ as he remained cagey over any potential signings for the club.

However, 11pm on Monday may not signal the end of transfer business for chairman Lee Power, with the emergency loan window opening seven days later and remaining open until Thursday, March 24.

“It is very difficult to say at the moment,” said Williams to BBC Wiltshire.

“Every team is looking at targets and potential targets and I think these things often go right down to the last day when people realise they can or can’t get a player and then start looking for the best option.

“At the moment it is a bit difficult to call anything for sure but I would have thought there would be something before the end of the window.”

Meanwhile, Town captain Nathan Thompson could be set for a place in the starting line-up for Barnsley’s visit on Saturday.

The 25-year-old has been on the substitutes’ bench for the last two outings, with Williams giving him half an hour during the 1-1 draw at Bramall Lane.

The club have been careful with the defender’s recovery from a troublesome groin injury, having seen the result of rushing him back too early in last season’s play-off final, but Thompson could lead the team out at the County Ground against the Tykes.

“We have tried to manage Nathan’s return as carefully as possible and I think we have done that,” added Williams.

“I think Nathan is very close to being ready to start the game and we will have to see whether he can finish that game as well.

“We’ll have to keep an eye on him to make sure he can come through the game without risking him.

“A lot of these games are ferocious in the first 15 to 20 minutes and that is where you are going to be required to make these big actions where you have got to sprint and compete with people.

“Nathan is prepared for that and we have got him ready and we’re getting him to the stage where he can take that in his stride.”
