CHAIRMAN Lee Power would love to see Louis Thompson return to Swindon Town on a full-time basis.

The midfielder – brother of Town club captain Nathan – was sold to Norwich in September 2014 but is currently on a third loan stint back at the County Ground.

Thompson made an immediate comeback to Swindon following his switch to Norwich and spent the entire 2014-15 campaign away from Carrow Road as Alex Neil led the Canaries into the Premier League.

He has had two further loan spells at Town this term, with the latter seeing him remain with the club until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old’s first-team opportunities at Norwich are likely to remain limited as long as they are in the top flight and Power says he would love to re-sign Thompson permanently, although finances could stand in the way of a possible move.

“We’d love to have Louis permanently,” Power told BBC Wiltshire.

“Louis has obviously moved on as a player – that is why he has gone to a Premier League football team.

“With that, his wages would have doubled or trebled, if not more, and also the fee involved that we received was sizeable.

“It is difficult to then bring players back permanently. We love Louis and his brother Nathan. They are a credit to their family and to the football club.

“If there was an affordable way to bring Louis back, of course we would.

“But we have to be fair to Louis. He has deserved his opportunity to go to Norwich and for whatever reason, he has found himself back here on loan, which he loves doing and is enjoying his football, but he needs to be given his chance.”

Town’s latest Thompson deal was agreed on February 1 but he has started just two of the seven games Luke Williams’ side have played since.

However, Power says the club will do what they can to ensure the player is playing at the highest level possible in the future.

The chairman added: “He has been unfortunate with injuries. Heloves the club that much that I think if he had the opportunity to play in the Championship, then he still likes to come back here.

“We shine Louis in the right light and I think Louis appreciates that and we appreciate him. Who knows in the future but he deserves his chance at Norwich.”
