ROBERT Lambert roared to British Final glory at Manchester’s National Speedway Stadium last night, posting an unquestionable 18-point maximum.

The 20-year-old, who starred for Team GB at the Speedway of Nations in Wroclaw over the weekend, went unbeaten in his five qualifying rides before using the outside line to his advantage to win his first ever national championship.

Teenager Dan Bewley finished second while defending champion Craig Cook picked up third.

Lambert’s success means he booked his place as wildcard for this year’s British Speedway Grand Prix at the Principality Stadium on Saturday, July 21.

The evening started in winning fashion for Danny King and Robert Lambert as the pair won heats one and two.

Swindon’s Adam Ellis made the perfect start to his British Final campaign with a comfortable win from gate two in heat three over Scott Nicholls – a seven-times British Champion – Ashley Morris and Chris Harris.

However he couldn’t back up his win from heat three as he trailed in last during heat seven as Robert Lambert remained unbeaten while Scott Nicholls earned his first race win after beating Dan Bewley in a power race to the line in heat eight.

Swindon reserve Jack Smith was handed a ride after Richie Worrall exceeded the two-minute time allowance in heat 11.

However his experience was short-lived as Phil Griffin excluded the teenager after he locked up in front of Rory Schlein – forcing the former Australian international off the bike.

Lambert and Harris were involved in a race-long tussle in heat 12, which Lambert won – meaning he remained unbeaten after three rides. The King’s Lynn Stars racer continued his winning run in heat 13 when rounding Scott Nicholls on the final turn in timely fashion to move onto 12 points.

Craig Cook and Rory Schlein both moved onto eight points with heat wins in races 14 and 15 while Bewley earned his first British Final win in heat 16.

Semi-final and final spots were confirmed in the concluding four qualifying heats as Robert Lambert and Craig Cook advanced straight to the final while Scott Nicholls, Jason Garrity, Dan Bewley and Kyle Howarth earned semi-final spots.

Garrity and Bewley advanced to the final following a race-long tussle for the lead with Scott Nicholls also involved.

The final saw Bewley initially lead before Lambert exploited Belle Vue’s wide outside lines to earn a comfortable and deserved first British Championship.
