SWINDON St George skipper Connor Tomley says his side underperformed as they drew 32-32 at home to Somerset Vikings in South West League West of England Pool A.

So far, the Vikings are the only side to beat St George this season, and Ben Whincup’s troops struggled against them again on a hot Saturday afternoon at Supermarine.

A win would have seen St George rise to the top of the table, but skipper Tomley says the fixture wasn’t the greatest game to watch.

St George trailed 24-18 at the break, but were able to rally in the second half to ensure the scores ended level.

Their points came from Sam Williams, Jerome Davies, Jack Daynes, Stu Hannah, Josh Williams and Nick Tuckett, who all crossed the tryline for the home side.

Tomley said: “The score didn’t reflect the game. It wasn’t a good game, it was average and we didn’t perform to the best of our abilities.

“I put it down to commitment. We don’t have a lack of numbers at training, but we don’t get a consistent group in there week in, week out.

“We do stuff at training but can’t carry that into games because people aren’t at both.

“Obviously people work, but it’s quite hard to do. It’s frustrating, but at the same time, you can’t do anything about it because people have lives.

“It’s still good for the confidence because we did not lose. There is a good side to it, but at the same time, we needed a bit more commitment.

“If everyone was able to make the effort, that would be great. But if we don’t make the effort, we have to go off what we can do on a Saturday.”

After facing Somerset earlier this season, Tomley admits his side came up against a slightly different opposition than they remembered.

“They weren’t the same side as the one we played when we went down there,” he added.

“The game wasn’t as physical. They had three or four players who ran the game for them, and they used that to their advantage.

“They didn’t play well as a team, but the game was hard.”
