JERMAINE McGlashan admits he has settled into life at Swindon Town quickly after completing the first few days of pre-season training with his new club.

The midfielder, who is Phil Brown’s only summer signing to date, joined Town from League One side Southend United after his release from the Essex club at the end of last season.

Having spent two days at Southampton Solent University undergoing a series of fitness tests at the start of last week, McGlashan got his feet to the ball for the first time this pre-season at Beversbrook Sports Facility last Wednesday for Town’s first session out on the training pitch.

Despite not knowing any members of the Town squad prior to joining the club, McGlashan says he has fitted in well and is already excited for the club’s opening two pre-season games against Cirencester Town and Melksham Town this week.

He said: “It’s always nice to get back into the training routine.

“I came here not knowing anyone, but they’re a good bunch and it’s allowed me to settle in well.

“Phil (Brown) knows the type of player that I am and what I’m here to do.

“At this stage, it’s all about minutes. Everybody wants minutes.

“It helps improve your sharpness. As much as working on the training ground is good, pre-season games help with match fitness.

“I’m looking forward to the local games and running down the wing.”

Last Wednesday’s first training session saw Town complete a warm-up circuit before jogging the perimeter of the Calne training ground for 30 minutes.

A series of two-touch drills followed before a game, structured largely on quick movement and picking out a pass, rounded off the session.

Vocal communication from boss Brown and number two Neil McDonald guided the Town squad through the session, while Matt Taylor and Marc Richards also proved leaders on the training field.

And such communication proved beneficial to McGlashan.

“Phil and Neil are both vocal coaches,” he said.

“Obviously I’ve worked with Phil previously, so I know his philosophies and how he runs things.

“Neil is new to everyone and he’s got a vocal side to him. As soon as the footballs come out, you hear him.

“We didn’t hear him too much on the first day.

“I’m learning names all the time, I’m enjoying it.”

Town begin their pre-season friendly programme away at local Southern League side Cirencester on Wednesday, with kick-off at the Corinium Stadium 7.45pm.

They then travel to another Wiltshire non-league outfit, Melksham Town on Saturday, before heading to Spain 24 hours later for a six-day training camp.
