MAX Birbraer believes there is “unfinished business’’ to complete at Swindon Wildcats after agreeing his return to the Link Centre for the 2018-19 campaign.

Forward Birbraer will embark on his third season with the Cats since joining from Telford Tigers in the summer of 2016, and despite helping the side to lift two pieces of silverware last term, the 37-year-old reckons a wrong still needs to be righted.

Swindon were on the verge of reaching the NIHL play-off finals last term but, despite winning both legs of their semi-final against Peterborough Phantoms, their hopes were scuppered after the team were deemed to have iced an unregistered player in the first match.

That deprived Aaron Nell's side of the chance to add league success to their Autumn Trophy and National Cup triumphs, and Birbraer believes striving for the clean sweep should be enough motivation for the roster next term.

“It’s going to sound like a cliché, but it was a no-brainer to come back to Swindon,’’ he said.

“I knew we were building towards something. I had fun in my first season and last season we came away with some trophies.

“There was obviously some drama which stopped us winning more than what we did, but this coming season feels like unfinished business. We want to prove we’re capable of winning everything, and that is the goal for the new season.’’

“Part of the reason for coming back was to achieve more. I’ve been on winning teams and I’ve been on losing teams, but I think last season was one of the most fun teams I’ve been on in a very long time.

“When Aaron gave me the opportunity to come back for another season, it was such a quick decision and I’m happy to be back in Swindon again.’’

Nell, who has now retained both imports after confirming skipper Jan Kostal’s return to the Link Centre last week, says Birbraer’s influence has increased and that the player has realised his importance within the side.

He said: “The biggest thing with the imports is getting them to buy into what you are trying to do, and they both do that. Max works extremely hard.

“In certain games, Max was able to turn them on their head.

“He’s tough to play against and has a bit more discipline from when he first joined.

"He understands how important he is to our team and he thrives on the pressure of being one of the top guys.”
