IT WAS a dramatic day on and off the pitch for Swindon Storm on Sunday as they registered a club-record 84-0 win away to Hastings Conquerors in Division Two of the British American Football Association.

Defensive co-ordinator Rich Westley stepped in to lead the team after head coach for Rich Van Sloten was forced to miss the match, and proved to be a lucky omen as Storm claimed victory.

Dan Thorne scored four times in the emphatic victory, while Greg Roscow, Jack Chandler, Ryan Crighton and offensive coach Sean Harper all added to the scoring.

The warm weather proved to be a problem for one of the club’s chain crew, bringing the game to a momentary standstill after requiring medical attention.

However, that did not disrupt Storm’s performance, as they saw out the game with little trouble.

Harper said: “It all came together because of the level of confidence and our opposition.

"Hastings have struggled just like we have, but we know from previous seasons we can produce, and our offence hasn’t changed too dramatically for it to have stopped working forever.

“The weather was very hot and, unfortunately, we had a delay because one of the chain crew, who help the sidelines, collapsed in the sun. Fortunately, the paramedics helped get him back on his feet and into some shade.

“We were making sure all our players were getting shade and hydrating constantly. To help combat the heat and fatigue, we made sure to keep rotating players where possible.

“We started fast and everything clicked on offence, whilst the defence managed to keep their first clean sheet too whilst continuing to make big plays.

“The win was fantastic and everyone is excited to finish the season strongly.”

Storm return to action on Sunday, July 15 in their penultimate game of the season, where they play the reverse home fixture against Hastings.
