FREE agents will be targeted by Swindon Town manager Phil Brown, who has already made three enquiries to players currently without a club.

The Town boss is weighing up his options and discussing budgets with club chairman Lee Power ahead of the free agent transfer window, which was opening today.

It’s unclear which specific positions Brown is targeting to boost within his squad, but the 59-year-old did reveal his belief that Town will be well equipped defensively should Dion Conroy and Chris Robertson depart the treatment room sooner than later.

Brown said: “The pretty boys in the playground won’t be available to us until Wednesday when that transfer window opens again.

“I’ve had words with the chairman with regards to three of them – that’s not to say I’m trying to squeeze any more money.

“I’m saying there are three or four players that could possibly come in on Wednesday and add to the squad.

“As far as I’m concerned, if we can get Chris and Dion out of the treatment room, and the mentality of the back four adjusted to dealing with set-pieces, I think we have enough.”

Options in Town’s back four were boosted last week when Brown drafted in loan signing Luke Woolfenden from Ipswich Town.

The signing was only confirmed at 4.53pm, seven minutes before the loan window closed – but remarkably two-and-a-half months after Brown had first enquired about him.

Understanding that his side sits outside the play-off positions after six games, Brown underlined the point that results must improve in the long-term if his side are to challenge for a top seven spot.

Despite this, Town’s overall performances have pleased the manager – though defending from set pieces has been pinpointed as an area the club must improve in.

“I’m a big believer in trends,” said Brown. “We’re six games in and we’ve got nine points, at the moment we’re outside the play-offs and I’ve got to do something about that.

“Whether that be on the training ground or team selection, our form at home or away, tactics – anything.

“We’ve addressed the issue of set-pieces by bringing another centre-half (Woolfenden) in. He’s a big lad, but he’s only a young one.

“Mick McCarthy said to me that he thought it was a no brainer, I was delighted at 4.53pm. I was getting nervous.

“We’ve now got competition for places.”

Town return to action on Saturday when making the trip north to face struggling Morecambe.
