IT will be a case of mind over matter for David Howell when he tees off at the EMAAR-MGF Indian Masters this morning, writes GARETH MOORHOUSE.

As the European Tour makes a historic first visit to India, the tree-lined fairways at the Delhi Golf Club are sure to provide a stern test for some of the world's top golfers.

Renowned for his course management and excellent short game, Swindon star Howell knows he must utilise both qualities to stand any chance of mounting a challenge this weekend.

Howell said: "It's a very tight course so everyone will be focussed on hitting as many fairways as they can.

"It's easy to plot your way around the course, but you've still got to hit the ball where you want it to go.

"Hopefully I can hit a few fairways and greens and then sink a few putts.

"I struggled with the putter in Dubai last week which is pretty unusual for me.

"But it got very windy after the first day and I think that had an effect on the greens.

"Hopefully I can get a good stroke going out here in Delhi and try to make another cut.

"Last week was another positive step and slowly I feel I'm getting back into it."

Howell got his challenge underway at 7.35am (British time) alongside Simon Dyson and Richard Finch.
